Is this name too unique?

Question

We are considering the name Ariadna for our baby girl who will arrive in four months. (G-d willing.) Anyway, we live in the States, but are planning on moving to Mexico in March. Ariadna is pronounced Ah-ree-ahd-nah in Spanish. My husband and I love the name when read in Spanish but have a problem with it in English. We are going to live in Mexico anyway right? Yes, but only for five years. We will be returning to the U.S. and I'm afraid the name will be too unique.

So, do you think Ariadna is too unique? Can you even pronounce it? How do you pronounce it in English? (We read it Ah-ree-add-nuh.)

Ten points to the best answer! And please answer all my questions, I really do want to hear your opinion. And please, please be nice. I don't want to report anyone.

I think its a beautiful name and unique at that.

I dont think its too unique. its not your naming your baby girl

cherry or anything. Well i think thats more weird then unique. lol.

If you love the name why should it matter what others think right?

And yes i can pronounce it. Again, i think its a beautiful name

and i think you should name your baby girl Ariadna.

i love that name. i think that your daughter will correct mispronunciation's to her name when she goes to school.kids usually have less problems with their names then you think.

I think it is really cute.  Some people might think it is arianna spelled wrong though.  I had the same problem!  My hubby is from uruguay and so we needed a name that would fit well in both spanish and english.  We chose Katia Laura

I think it's a beautiful name. I have a unique name and it love it. I think having a unique name gives you a better since of yourself identity. You feel like an individual rather then a copy or a drone. Its not too difficult for me to pronounce. I think you should go for it, if you both love it.

That is a nice name and there are so many unique names today. I new a girl we called viri her name was viridiana and there was another girl Her name translated to english was star but I thought those were very nice names. I hope this helps you out.

I think you have to think about the long term here. The name is nice for Mexico but I see many problems with even pronouncing the name in the USA. What would be the closest name to an American name that you both would like and Americans could pronounce. What does the name mean in English? I think Ariana or Adrianna would be better for when you move back to the USA. Congrats and pray that you have a healthy baby no matter what the name is.

There never has been nor ever will be a name too unique...my name is unique and I love it and its a great conversation starter...though many misspell it mispronounce it and in general mangle it I still love it...so go for it I think Ariadna is a beautiful name...what does it mean.

Teachers usually ask students how their names are pronounced. So when your daughter is at school, her teachers and classmates will pronounce it the way it is supposed to be pronounced. Things should be fine because her name is unique to the point where it will be remembered.

I think that it is a beautiful name and I hope the pronunciation does not discourage you from naming her Ariadna. :)

Nah its cute. Frank Zapper called his kids Moon Unit and Dweezil, Ariadna is different but not stupid or weird.

When i first saw it I pronounced it Ah-ri-ah-dee-n-ay. haha so i was like WHATT!!! but when u said its pronounced Ah-ree-add-nuh then it sounds pretty..its sort of like Adriana

I prefer the Spanish pronunciation since it is a softer "A" sound.   More feminine.  That is the way I would have pronounced it anyhow. ( I think it is Greek.)  Your daughter will use what ever pronunciation you teach to her.  Others should use the same as well.  If anyone says it wrong, correct them. I know folks who have the simplest of names yet still have to remind others of the "correct" pronunciation.

I do not think you have to worry about it being too unique.  There are quite a few names that are variations of it anyhow.  And all very pretty.  It just might be a very popular name in  5 years!

It's sound good, but many people wont be able to pronounce it in English. But name your baby what ever you want you will be calling that forever!

I don't think it is too unique but I did have a little difficulty with pronouncing it. Once I looked at it again it was easy but the first time I wanted to say Audrianna.

I would try it but be prepared to help others with pronouncing it.

Ariadna is a lovely name. it's not to unique, and yes i can prounounce it. if you're worried that when you return to the states people are going to have trouble saying her name, then they can just call her Aria as a nickname.

the meaning of Ariadna is nice to; most holy.

people are afraid to call their kids foreign names because they are afraid that all te other kids will have ordainary names like jack and mary and that they'll stick out.

but foreign names are wonderful and have a meaning while most names don't.

There is no such this as "too unique," keep that name for her, she will be a very interesting person, in my opinion, people are who they are, by their names. She won't be one of those people that are "unique, just like everyone else." She will be her own unique =P

I think that when you are in Mexico she won't care what her name is. I mean everyone needs and cares but she will be young. And in my opinion I think you should chose an American name because when you do live in US she will want a suitable name.

That's a beautiful name, and it's unique. Unique is such a good thing. Knowing that your daughters going to be the only one in the school named that. She'll stand out more.

with a name that is unique, you will constantly be telling people how to say it...i knew a girl whose name was maribella in english you would pronounce it mary- bell- uh in spanish it was mar- bay- uh

I've always loved the different spelling of the name (Ariadne).  It's pretty spelled that way too.  But, one thing to think about, is that when you move back in five years..she'll be of an age that you can shorten it to make it easier on her and others and call her Aria. Just a thought.

I happen to be Greek. In Greek Mythology there's a girl called Ariadne(Uh-ree-uhth-nee)

Confusing to pronounce ha *_*.

Anyway, Ariadna is pronounced Uh-ree-uhth-nah

So I guess in English it's pronounced Uh-ree-uhd-nah!

It's a nice name. There is no such thing as TOO UNIQUE unless you name you child Terruias!

I will have to admit I had trouble pronouncing it. Why don't you just use Adriana [ay-dree-ahn-ah]. It will be easier to pronounce for americans. Since you'll only be living in Mexico for 5 years, you'll be back to the States just in time for your daughter to start school, and in school is where she will need her name pronounced right.
