My son is 14 and is on a youth baseball team, he is a catcher, and during practice catchers are only required to wear a catchers mask while catching, I would like him to wear all the protective equipment he can, but he says he doesnt need it because it is just practice.

Why is a cup really that important if it just practice?

  1. Practice still consists of hard thrown balls and should be treated with as much respect as a game - it's like riding your bike without a helmet on one two-lane road and only requiring the helmet on a four lane road...  cars go fast enough to hurt you in both circumstances!

Think of it this way: Just because it's practice doesn't turn it into a little girls softball team!

Here's how you get your son to obey easily:

Simple - talk to the coach.   Tell him you notice that balls are thrown hard in practice and should you tell your son to wear his cup?

If you say it right, the coach will agree with you.

Then you go to your son and you say "I asked the coach and he SAID you have to wear it" - how does your son argue that?  He 'knows' the coach will be watching.

The coach will remember your conversation and will agree with the edict is approached - after all, he doesn't want to upset any parents if a kid gets hurt!

  2. My nephew is eight and has to wear a cup to practice and he's NOT a catcher. If he gets hit in the groin, his p***s can break, his testicles can be thrust back into his body, meaning he needs an operation to retrieve them and put them back, among other problems. I'd insist he wears a cup and get the coach to insist everyone else does, too.

  3. You know i understand what you are saying. I think he should also. He probably is supposed to.  This may be one of those lessons that he may need to learn on his own

  4. Yeah a cup is important or he'll break his balls like the first chick said.

  5. practice is no different than a game anything can happen, i know they don't like cups, but if he doesn't get to a ball in time, and it hits him in his area, he'll regret not wearing it. he can't break his p***s by the way, there's no bone,  it's just tissue, though the tissue can get hurt. and his balls can get damaged to a point to where he can't have kids.
