when i was skating with my friend i didn't bring my ice skates (cause i was visiting another state) and i used the rentals and i could hardly skate. just wondering if anyone has done this before and couldn't skate. i am a figure skater, so was it because my feet are used to supportive quality skates?

  1. I'd say you're pretty normal.  You're more brave than I am!!!  I'd be afraid to wear rentals after skating in "real" skates for so long!!  You're probably used to having the support there from your boot that rental skates just don't offer.  Your skates probably have a lot more padding in them too!  Also, don't forget -- you're probably used to a much better blade that is sharpened and maintained the way a blade should versus a blade that random people use for skating, to walk on cement and to dig holes in things.  :)

  2. Haha, it would be fun if anyone skated at the same rink a majorly famous senior skater does and dared them to try some of their figures with rentals. I can imagine even a guy like Brian Joubert skating really badly with a poorly sharpened pair of rentals.

It's a known fact, rental skates suck. Hope you remember to bring your skates next time you travel. I personally can't imagine myself using rentals ever again (and considering they have no toepicks, I'd probably be falling all over the place haha).

  3. just so you know its not you all rental skates are crappy! i went with my friend one time and she knows how to do camels and stuff in that level and she couldn't even do a half flip so thats to show you that it is not you its the skates!!!

  4. That is part of it. The support in rentals is not that great especially if you are used to the level of support in good boots made for figure skating.

Also, and more of an issue with the rental skates is that the blades generally do not have a good edge to them. I've seen rental skates that had almost no hollow on the blades. I used to teach group lessons and the blades on the rentals were horrible. The kids slid all over. I tried to sharpen the skates myself to make it better.

So don't worry - the rental skates can make you think you are worse of a skater than you really are!!!

  5. Yes, this is definitely normal!

If not, then I am not normal either.

I once traveled somewhere for the summer, and since my rink is not open in the summer I assumed i wouldn't be skating.

I ended up going to a rink and using rental skates, and honestly, everything was shaky. I thought it was because i wasn't skating since my season ended but once i attempted a few jumps and landed them and the skates kept buckling, and i kept falling i knew there must've been something wrong.

the truth is rental skates have pretty much no support, AND the blades are horrible.

Rental skates are just for recreational skating and people using rental skates usually walk across floors and wood and metal ruining the blades. There is almost no padding and no support therefore no one would be able to skate in rental skates as they do in their own skates.

Another factor would be your skates are the shape of your foot whereas rental skates practically have no shape since everyone's feet have been in them.

So don't worry. I'm sure you are a wonderful skater but you should definitely pack your skates from now on just incase. you could get seriously hurt if you try anything too dangerous on rental skates.
