  1. the brownish stuff is old blood. when your period ended, there was still some left that just came a little later. its ok.

  2. its fine if its your first period, but i wouldn't swim if you're not comfortable - it'll be fine but if you're thinking about it all the time then it wouldn't be worth it.

  3. As it's been mentioned that brownish discharge was the end of your period, just old blood making it's way out. Totally normal and fine to swim (with a tampon).

I did want to address the comment about 10 days being abnormal. When you first start getting your period, your body's still sort of getting used to the whole routine. Your periods may be a bit longer than most women's normal. Or they may be oddly spaced (not every 28 days or so at first). Again, this is normal.

DO talk to your mom and/or health care provider if you are bleeding a lot (having to change your pad or tampon more than every hour) or if you feel "funny" during your period (lightheaded, way more tired than usual, or if you faint). These are signs that you are losing a lot of blood.

  4. The brownish stuff is your period kiddo.

Periods can be brown, pink or red.

You can swim if you are comfortable with using a tampon. Talk to your mom about it first.

  5. 10 days?! thats not normal.

  6. Just FYI:  You can swim, it won't "leak"  or follow you like a trail because it is not the actual menses (period blood) and you can use a tampon if you're concerned about how much there is.  Have you had your yearly pap smear? Are you on birth control?

I have had problems with brown discharge right before and after my period and even after s*x.  I have even bled during s*x.  I've had several pap smears over a few months, and was tested for pregnancy and STI's. All the tests were negative. It turns out that it was all being caused by stress -- your first period could be a really stressful thing...especially the first few because your body is still working out the kinks.

Talking with your Mom or your doctor might be a good option, because your Mom/Doctor probably know you better than a bunch of strangers speculating things about your health online.  If you do go to the doctor, you might also want to discuss a low estrogen birth control pill, they can really help with regulating flow, eliminating painful cramping etc...  It could be spotting that sometimes occurs with ovulation. It could also be spotting that sometimes occurs during implantation of a fertilized egg (it didn't say if you're sexually active or not, so I added this just to cover all bases.) But, it is really just old/dried blood left over that your body is "cleaning up." This can also appear at the beginning of a period if your flow starts off light and can be stringy, brown, before the fresh blood begins to flow. But, no worries, it's very "normal."

  7. That is perfectly normal.  When your period ends the discharge usually goes from red to a brownish color.  Yes, you can swim if you are having discharge, just use a tampon. :o)
