Question:

Is this normal for a 2 1/2 month old bearded dragon?

This morning I noticed that my bearded dragon ( 2 1/2 months) had an odd looking bowl movement. Normally it is solid brown with white attached. This morning it was different. It had a mucus-like cover over it and the bowl itself looked to be a grayish color.

I have not changed his diet. He gets greens, carrots, and apple cut up small, in a bowl each morning. As well as crickets each day.

I'm just worried that maybe his food isn't being digested properly, or if I'm just being paranoid.

-I checked his UVB and heat light, both are working just fine- The temperature of the tank has not changed either

please help

  1. has your bulb stop giving off UVB but is still giving off light, cuz that could be your problem

  2. That's not really normal but it can happen.  If it's the same for more than a couple days in a row without going back to the way it should be, call a herp vet.  If it does go back to normal, don't worry.

You only really need to worry when it persists or if your beadie's behavior also changes (ie: eats less, or is less active).

You didn't say what the temperature is-just that it's fine.  I've known some people who insist that 60 degrees F is fine so please forgive me for asking.  Around 80 with the basking spot 95-105 is what you should be aiming for.  Sometimes if a beardie starts acting a little "off" all you need to do is raise the temperature 2-5 degrees-but keep an eye one it in case it starts keeping its mouth open which means it's either too hot or has a respiratory infection (which requires a vet).

I'm glad to see you're feeding him a lot and use a  UVB bulb.  Far too many people think baby beardies only need to be fed one or two crickets every three to four days...not thinking that babies of any species need to be eating constantly.  Baby beardies usually eat 2-3 dozen crickets a day (no larger than the area between their eyes).  My only comment on the UVB bulb is that if you're using the small tube one in a black fixture (~$30-or any other setup with a bulb cover), you need to remove the clear plastic cover over the bulb as the UVB doesn't go through it at all.  Most people don't see the fine print in the instructions that say you need to remove for UV exposure.

Sound like you're doing everything right so great job!  Just keep an eye on your baby to make sure his behavior doesn't change.

  4. It sounds like just a different type of bowel movement. Your bowel isn't always the exact same color and consistency, same with the dragon. If you notice any major color or consistency change, then I would worry, small changes could be based on what it's feed.  When you say greens I hope you don't include iceberg lettuce, there is no nutritional value and can give the runs.
