Question:

Is this normal for a one month old?

My son just turned 1 month old yesterday. I'm not to sure how much he should be focusing or even how much he can even see yet. But when I talk to him, he doesn't really make eye contact. He's always looking up or to his left side. Once in a while it will look like he's making eye contact but hardly ever. I'm just wondering if this is normal or if I should be worried. I have a neighbor who has autism so I think that thought is always in the back of my head. Your answers are appreciated!

  1. Its normal I have a 10 week old and I'm always wondering if my daughter is doing everything she's supposed to at her she especially since she was a preemie. Her doctor just tells me not rush things babies do things on their time and every baby is different you can't think because someones baby focused on objects at 1 month my son or daughter will your baby sounds fine but just to give you a piece of mind you could have his doctor check him don't worry he sounds fine enjoy your little one

  2. he is fine i have a two month old and he really just started looking at us.

  3. I wouldn't worry, it's pretty normal at this stage.  Newborns are highly near sighted so can only see something clearly when it's about 6 - 12 inches in front of them.  When you're with him be sure to put your face quite close.  And when babies are over stimulated they will look away.  It's their way of saying, "mom, it's too much right now, I just want to chill out."  And remember, EVERYTHING is so new to them that they will try to look at everything they can.  Keep giving him all your love and attention and in a while (could be a few months) he'll give you that deep look in your eyes and you'll just melt!

Now, if by 6 months you aren't seeing those warm smiles  or happy expressions then you should talk to your doctor.  Until then, be patient mommy and enjoy your new little man!

  4. When my son was one month old, he was still sleeping 22 hours of the day. You can't tell anything at this age. It is way too early. I'm sure he'll start making eye contact by 3 months. I understand your worry. All mothers worry. He sounds perfectly normal (and so do you!).

  5. its fine at the moment.

if it continues in a few months, get him checked out. but at the moment he's fine.

    good luck =]
