ok I have 2 cats and 5 dogs trying to re-home 2 and the father of the 4 puppies goes into the kitchen every time we are not home or are asleep and is there is left-over wet cat food on a plate on the floor, he eats it. Also like maybe once a month I will give him a cat treat instead of a dog treat. Is this ok? Will it hurt him?

SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE! I don't get taken seriously most of the time.

  1. Having some cat food wont hurt him at all.  Anyway. my vet did discourage me from feeding cat food to dogs frequently.

  2. Don't leave cat food down, dogs love it. These too much protein and fat in cat food and a regular diet of it over a period of time will damage a dogs kidneys.

  3. I dont think it'll hurt him. But I would discourage that behavior from now on.

I give my dog a cat treat every once in a while.

  4. Cat food won't hurt him, assuming he's just eating a little in addition to his normal diet. It's like if he ate random people food.

You might want to give him low-calorie dog food in his regular diet if he starts getting fat from this.

Keep in mind, if someone convinces you that "cat food is just the same as dog food," that you should never actually replace dog food with cat food- they have different nutritional demands. While it's ok for cats and dogs to snack on each others' food, they need their OWN food which is specially formulated to provide the nutrients each breed requires.

  5. Don't worry! I have a small yorkie who loves to eat out of my 10 year old cat's food bowl (the cat is overweight, so it is kinda good she's not eating as much!) Anyway, don't let your dog eat too much cat food. I advise putting the cat food on a shelf where only the cats can reach. You can keep the food there, only if you tie up the dog to something in the house.

  6. No, I don't think it would.  Cat food is all my late dog would eat.  It didn't harm him at all.

  7. A little bit of cat food now and then won't harm your dog. Some dogs prefer the smell and taste of cat food to dog food. It is even okay to mix a little bit of cat food in with the dog food, but only a little. Too much cat food is not good for dogs as they have very different dietary needs and can become ill if they eat too much of it. Never let the cat food replace the dog food in his diet.

  8. Dogs are what dogs are.  They think only about four things:

    1)  Food - of any kind

    2)  Exercise - the more the better

    3)  Dominance  - Need to understand pack order

    4)  Chasing Cats

The cat food will not hurt the dog.  Let's face it you could eat it and nothing wrong would happen.  If the dog starts to Meeoooowwwww get worried otherwise don't worry.   Why not buy the dog, doggy treats.

  9. Well it wouldn't harm him as such, however, it depends on the type of food some cheaper brands do contain small bones and these could get caught in his throat. cat foods can also contain much higher salt and sugar levels not good for active dogs especially the salt.

Again with the cat treats they tend to be softer so wouldn't benefit him with his teeth, it is possible if a dog gets too much soft food for him to lose his front teeth which can lead to a shrinking of the lower jaw a very

    painful and serious condition.

I think its more of a problem with his training!

I would suggest that he is showing his dominance by eating the cat food and you are reinforcing this by giving him the cat treats.

I would suggest picking up left over food from the floor when the cat stops eating this will prevent the behaviour in the first instance and if he is an a balanced diet the extra food will just increase his weight while the cat is possibly going hungry (or the portions are to big)?

    Hope this helps?

  10. no, its all pretty much the same stuff lol.... as long as your don't feed him chocolate he will be fine lol.... you should see what some people feed there dogs so i wouldn't worry about a bit of meat with gravy or jelly on it..... as long as he eats his own food too thats fine :)

  11. It won't ....kill him, but it's not good for him to do that on a regular bass.

  12. dog food and cat food is NOT the same. Dogs and cats have different dietary needs and their food is formulated to meet them. While it won't hurt him once in a while I wouldn't recommend that he have it on a regular basis. Cat food is much more calorie dense as well
