Question:

Is this ok for a betta fish?

I'm interested in buying a betta fish but I want to make sure I get all the right materials first. I know some people say you can leave them in tanks with no filters but I'd prefer to have one. When I looked around I saw people writing about using air filters. But when I looked online for them all I found were things called air pumps (like this one for instance http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753023 ) Is this the same thing? And is there any other advice you could give me on starting out with a betta fish?

  1. That isnt even a filter. The only purpose of an air pump is to supply oxygen to the water. That wont even come close to cleaning your water.

Actually i would NOT reccomend getting a filter for a betta. The reason for this is because filters create currents in the water and bettas are very sensitive to such things and they will get very stressed out. Plus it wouldnt do much good any way because honostley they really dont need one. They produce very little waste and hardley make a mess. Soo getting a filter would do more harm then good.

  2. no,that pumps air for oxygenation which is also vital, but a filter is not the same thing, get a small sponge filter.

  3. No they are not the same things.

That is to pump oxygen into the water to help the fish breathe. You really wouldnt need one for a betta though, as they have a special organ that allows them to breathe air from the surface.

An air filter usually does not work as some other filters.

A sponge filter is good for bettas, so is a Bio Wheel as the water flow is usually pretty soft.

You could use almost any filter though, if you tie panty hose or something to where the water comes out of the filter and this will make the current suitable for a betta :)

    Good luck

  4. Make sure that you only get 1.

When I had Betta Fish, there was two of them in one tank and it was not a good mix. One fish ate the other.

  5. I think all of this depends on the size of the tank you are planning on getting.. I have a betta and just decided to get a filter for his tank about a couple of weeks ago after having him for about a year.. and only because it cuts down on me having to clean it all of the time, the only thing you need to make sure you have is an air pump which provides oxygen in the water, other than that you really dont need filters for bettas unless you dont like cleaning it like once a week. they are pretty simple to take care of and if for some reason they arent fed they can go for weeks without food.. they are great fish to start out with but the only downside is that they really aren't meant to be with other fish, just by themselves usually :)

  6. No it is not the same as a filter. Make sure if you get a Betta and a filter that their is at least one part of the top of the water that is still so he can nest. There is really no need to get an air pump with a Betta. Especially if you plan to have a filter.
