If you put your child for adoption, is it possible to obtain a birth certificate for the child in the state of California? Assuming the natural father signed the certificate or does it void everything out once rights are signed over?

  1. Once the adoption has been finalized, the original BC is sealed (so that it can't be used again, just consulted if need be) and an adoption certificate is given to the adoptive parents in its place.  Until then, you can get a copy of the birth certificate online.

So, once the adoptive parents have the adoption certificate, you can't get a copy of the original birth certificate, because it no longer 'officially' exists; it's been sealed.
