My mum has just got a quote of £2700 for 2 guys to replaster her reasonably sized living room, rip out the gas fireplace n mantelplace n fit a new one, fit a new boiler and plaster the living room ceiling n a few wee odd jobs. Does anybody know if this is a good price? I don't want my wee mam getting ripped off! Thanks all.

  1. well, it depends really, how big was the room. and how big was the fireplace, what's the new one like. is it well put in, but remember how much metal costs nowadays. and how long will it take? but still, it could just be generally awkward, saying that, how much does it cost to buy a packet of plaster, a bucket and everything else, no more than a tenner i would presume. but then theres the price of everything else.. the fireplace, the mantlepiece, the disposing of the old stuff etc. but tbh, i'd never pay it.

  2. sounds about right but thats only a guess, there's quite a bit of work going into that job.

  3. Reading your question, i take it that the £2700 is for labour only? If that's the case my advice would be, get more quote's.   Hope this helps :) :) :)

  4. god knows

  5. With the way prices are going up its a fair price.ps make sure that they are with corgi

  6. Only if they are a legit company

  7. as a builder myself this sounds quite reasonable you could pay up to £1500 just on the boiler replacement £800 for plastering

  8. It sounds reasonable..

However ..Before the work goes ahead tell your mum to get at least 2 more quotes..Also ensure the gas fitter is Corgi Registered. If he is not the fitting of the boiler will be illegal and will affect any potential insurance issues.

Ask around the neighbours too for recommendations for builders..

Most of my decorating work comes from word of mouth..

Overall the price seems to be about right though..

  9. check their corgi registration

as said above they are unlikely to be corgi and GOOD plasterers. if you pay corgi fees you tend to keep doing gas work not plastering rooms

get quotes from others, gas fitters and plasterers

ask to look at their work, if they put you off or say they cant/wont let you dont use them

  10. It doesn't sound bad to me, but i would always get at least 2 quotes preferably 3.

  11. If fitting a boiler, its reasonable. Ensure they are Corgi registered though and demand to see registration card, for if not corgi registered and something goes wrong, you will not have a leg to stand on.

    Be Sure & Be Safe

  12. Fitting the boiler alone should be £2500 to £3000, so to have all the other jobs as well that is a good price.

  13. Depends where you are in the country. It sounds expensive to me considering its labour only. I would expect to pay £800 with £1000 tops as the amount of work involved is about 3 - 4 days maximum. It sounds about right if they were supplying the materials. What it sounds like to me is that these two guys are probably Corgi registered and they would do the boiler but would get in a plasterer to do the plastering and they will have put there cut onto the plastering price, hence the over inflated price. My advice is to get 3 quotes from a corgi plumber and 3 quotes from plasterers. I know it sounds a bit to much like hard work but will have a big saving. Good Luck!

  14. Get more quotes - never rely on just one.

Second point - if they are touching gas appliances they must have Corgi registration to remove and refit. No Corgi license - not allowed to touch it.

Somehow - 2 guys plastering and touching gas appliances does not ring true - aren't alarm bells ringing for you???

Added - just seen your addition about your mum buying all the stuff - NO WAY - that is way to expensive for a quote - get some more quotes done. By the time she has bought all the stuff - the £2700 you quote will soon become £3300.

Plastering an average sized room will take no more than two days - if two people are plastering - make that one day - allow one day to remove and refit the the boiler - the boiler alone (a decent one) will set her back about £595 - £800. The £2700 quoted now becomes £3500.

Example - I had a new boiler fitted recently - a top range A rated - one day and they had to remove half the kitchen to get to it - £1600 including the boiler.

She is being ripped off I suspect

  15. it sounds like alot of work, so yes it seems ok, but get a couple more quotes before you go ahead with the work.

for example, i had my bedroom ceiling plastered, the guys took down the old ceiling, put plasterboard up and skimmed it, this cost me £450, the ceiling is around 13ft square. hope this helps to work it all out

    good luck

  16. if they have the right stuff eg corgi registered for the boiler and in the fmb for the plastering, i spoke to a friend in the trade and this sounds fair
