Is this quote right?

I just went to insurance.com to get a quote for car insurance in my name. I’ve never had insurance before and I was quoted approx. $4K for 1 year, isn’t that a bit high??? I’m female, 31 y/o, and live in Queens, NY. That’s quite expensive in my opinion or is that about right?? Also, I have horrendous credit, do they base their quote on your credit as well?

  1. Yes, in some states, insurance companies are allowed to look at your credit history when determining your auto insurance premium.  If you have "horrendous" credit, you are seen as a high risk to the auto insurance company.

$4,000 might be a bit high but it really just depends on certain factors like what type of car is being insured.  You say you have never had insurance before, do this mean you have never driven before?

Just because you got one quote online doesn't mean you have to pay that much. Try looking at multiple quotes with different auto insurance companies.  When you find one that you think is the best, give them a call and ask if you qualify for any discounts.  Research is the key to finding the best auto insurance.  Don't settle for a rate that you believe is too high.

If you are interested in comparing quotes online for free, check out the websites below,  the first one allows you to compare quotes for all the insurance companies in your area, and the second one has general information about car insurance.

  2. yes i think that is really high, unless you have a very expensive car.  you are high risk, so it will be a little high, but not that high.

call around to the major insurance compains, geico, statefarm, all state, progressive.  any one of those would probably be a lot less than what you were quoted.  State Farm was the cheapest I could find for myself.

  3. That is VERY high. Even if you have horrendous credit, that is entirely too high in my opinion. Don't do those crappy online quotes, they're never accurate and are generally a rip off. You need a high risk insurance company because you've never had insurance, and you've got bad credit. I'd suggest calling Geico, they would be the perfect company for your needs and definitely a lot cheaper.

  4. They base rates, partially on credit but even in a large city, that still seems high.  What kind of car are you insuring?  Get some other quotes
