  1. We have always thought of earthworms and compost worms as partners in gardening; these familiar friends are good for the soil.

    The ones causing the problems are introduced species and these are a BIG problem for our Northern forest.  Earthworms quickly devour the leaf litter that covers forest floors, depriving many creatures, from bacteria and fungi to bacteria to small birds and amphibians of food and shelter.  Even native tree seedlings have difficulty germinating.
