Question:

Is this really the state of the Irish Language?

I went into a Post Office in what is supposedly the Donegal Gaeltacht, and told the woman behind the counter "TÃƒÂ¡ cheadÃƒÂºnas teilifÃƒÂs uaim". Instead of selling me a TV licence, she apologised in English, with a local accent, that she didn't understand Polish!

Pffffft rofl!!! Thats hillarious!!! Fair enough she might not have been able to speak Irish (in a Gaeltacht region???) But Polish?? Is she stooopid??

well i speak fluent Irish and i love the language!

we actually talked about this in school a few days ago....

its ridiculous that every single kid doesnt come out of the 13/14 year long school system with a really good standard of irish.

it all comes down to the way in which its taught

only myself (and 3 other people) in my whole class are studying honours irish for the LC!!

its easy for me because my dad went to irish schools and he taught me when i was little

Why is it that some people in my class (who can ace honours french) have such a problem with irish?

you have to agree that the way they teach it in schools is terrible and it forces people to hate it

Im rambling!

But i do agree that its a really sad thing (because the majority of people would like to be fluent)

Sorry... it is sad.

My beau and I plan on taking Irish language classes in L.A. for fun (he's part Irish). Hopefully by the time we learn and actually go to Ireland, they'll still be people left who speak it there.

If it makes you feel better, here in the U.S. people barely speak or write in English anymore.

Yes, its sad isn't it.  I'm not irish, but my great aunt is, so I visit quite regularly.

In the space on 15 years I have seen Ireland change very much.  You have a Nigerian Major in one of your towns, and the rest are filled with Romanian beggers.

Its a sight for sore eyes.

There are some significant variations in the 3 dialects of Irish - If you're speaking Standard Irish in a different accent maybe she didn't understand you - and although I am not a fluent Irish speaker I can tell you that you didn't quite ask for a TV licence - you sort of just said there isn't one (lit) "A TV licence is without"

it's not surprising

the way irish is taught is an absoloute disgrace,it makes people hate the language,which i do thanks to how tedious my learning experience of it was

i got an A1 in HL french in my leaving and now speak it fluently but i thankfully have never used or needed to use irish<<< isn't that strange,ireland taught me better at french than they did with irish

You'd have no problem in Kerry or Galway, or indeed in many other places further south.
