Is this sentence written correctly?

The main reason why the Olympic Games were held in Ancient Greece was because they wanted to worship their three main gods: Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus.

I would change it this way:

The Ancient Greeks used the Olympic Games to worship Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus, their main gods.

It's simpler. I'm not certain how important it is to include the "main reason" statement..

Well, most of that is right, but I'm pretty sure that they were also help in honor of Nike, the Goddess of Athletics. (Hence the shoe brand)

Also, 'they' should be 'the Greeks' or something similar, giving us the proper information on who is holding the games.
