Sahih Muslim, Book 8, Number 3425 states:

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hadhaifa, lived with him and his family in their house. She (i. e. the daughter of Suhail came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Salim has attained (purbety) as men attain, and he understands what they understand, and he enters our house freely, I, however, perceive that something (rankles) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa, whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said to her: Suckle him and you would become unlawful for him, and (the rankling) which Abu Hudhaifa feels in his heart will disappear. She returned and said: So I suckled him, and what (was there) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa disappeared.

Fact is, adult suckling is premitted in hadith. Does this not go to everything else we learned, especially when talking about modesty?

  1. This is a narration from Saheeh Muslim in Arabic:

جاءت سهلة بنت سهيل إلى النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم فقالت : يا رسول الله إني أرى في وجه أبي حذيفة من دخول سالم-و هو حليفه-فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ((أرضعيه)) فقالت: و كيف أرضعه و هو رجل كبير ؟ فتبسم رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم و قال ((قد علمت أنه رجل كبير)).

Ibn Qudaamah reported in his al-Mughnee that the position of 'Aa'ishah radhiallaahu anhaa (the one who narrated this Hadeeth) is that the Breast feeding the adult to make them Mahram, likewise this was reported from 'Ataa bin Abee Rabbaah and Layth bin Sa'ad.

Ibn Hazm mentioned this in his al-Muhalla as well.

But the stronger proof they use is this verse:

    وَأُمَّهَاتُكُمْ اللاَّتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ مِنْ الرَّضَاعَةِ

As they take this verse to be Mutlaq and not muqayyid.

However there is a difference in this opinion whether they take this position as Mutlaq or as an exception with the case of Saalim.

It's not a "new" discussion brought about by al-Azhar. However as much as I disagree with their Fatwa, they have a basis from the scholars of the past amongst them Ibn Hazm al Andalusee who reported that position in his Muhalla. And Ibn Hazm al Andalusee refuted the 'Aqlaanee and the Rawaawidh in their positions concerning this.

Now this Hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim has been reported with a strong chain of narration, so your only argument against it would be the claim "It goes against... logic"

Imaam ash-Shawkaanee mentioned in his Nayl al Awtaar that this hadeeth is reported Mutawaatur. Meaning there are so many chains of narration for it.

You cannot claim it's against the Qur'aan because those who would use this Hadeeth as evidence use the verse I quote from the Qur'aan in Support. And you cannot play around with that verse except by interpretations. So the Scholars like Ibn Hazm who used that verse, went to the interpretation based on the Mother of the Believers, 'Aa'ishah radhiallaahu anhaa which was reported by way of 'Ataa and others.

The correct position of the People of Knowledge is that it does not make one a Mahram unless the breast feeding was done in the first two years of the persons life.

This was reported by at-Tirmidhee, al-Bukhaaree, al-Baghawee, al-Maawardee and other than them.

Ibn 'Abdul Barr and Ibn Abee Mulayka mentioned that one of the narrators from 'Aa'ishah radhiallaahu anhaa that this narration was an older narration and it was not acted upon.

Ad-Daarimee reported that this was strictly for Saalim and not a general ruling.

And there is a hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim which points to this as well in which 'Aa'ishah radhiallaahu anhaa stated that this ruling was for Saalim specifically.

And the stronger position is proven by the Hadeeth:

    فإنما الرضاعة من المجاعة

Indeed breast feeding is in the Majaa'ah (the early stages, first 2 years)

And there is much more to say about this issue, but if you made up your mind based on your intellect then you've stuck yourself in a position.  This religion is not based on your intellect, it's based on revelation, the Quraan and Sunnah.

    EDIT:

Meekal, yes there is evidence for using the cups. This is mentioned by a number of the people of knowledge.

  2. One man who sells fish said

man akala matti min ummatti dakhala jannatti

    matti a kind of fish

  3. there is no such thing in Quran. so this thing contradict Quran. hence its a fabricated hadith

  4. It IS authentic. However, the misunderstanding was of 'Aisha and that "scholar" who issued the fatwa. As I've heard of it, 'Aisha took this as a permanent rule to allow men to come and ask her questions about Islam. The problem is, 'Aisha never had a baby and so (if I'm not wrong) she couldn't suckle, could she? And, as I've heard, everybody else at the time of 'Aisha disagreed with her. Moreover, There is no notion in the Hadith you quoted as to say whether the suckling was directly from the breast (?!) or it was done by using cups (i.e. the woman poured the milk into cups and the guy drank it). I've heard that it was done by using cups but I'm not sure if there is evidence for it.

  5. I know of a fataw issued by Al-azhar ,saying that working women should adult-breatfeed their co workers so that they become maharam and so she can work in peace..

    ***faints***

    **gets up again**

Fatwa was critisized by majority of scholars..Well,but after all possible humiliation by media against Islam..Good work scholar, good work..keep it up..

    @seilbi,what does that mean?

"u'll go to heaven if u eat sardine"? is it??

  6. The translation is not accurate

The word Rida'a in Arabic means both direct breast feeding or indirect

She put her milk in a glass and he drank it

For the record the Azhar Fatwaa has nothing to do with this! the Azhar is a corrupted place
