Is this stupid or impossible now?

I'm 18 years old and I'm quite depressed at the moment. I left school with hardly any GCSE's and didn't go to college or anything. For the past two years i've been working as a waiter and have done abit of bar work and cleaning jobs. But now i really want to build a good life for myself and more importantly build a good solid career.

I want to join the police force and become a police officer. I would love to do this as a career but can i do it with hardly any GCSE's? And is it likely they will even accept me at 18? I'm really good with people and i am hard working plus determined.

What do you guys think?

  1. Whilst formal qualifications are an advantage, the police have their own entrance tests.

A friend has just made it into the Met, she first worked for a while as a community support officer.

  2. I am not sure but when my friend enrolled he had to have 3 gcse with min "C" grade but now i think you have to become community police first then you can join the regulars but it would be worth going to a police station and asking exactly what is required, it is i am told a rewarding career you have at least a couple of years to join as i also think 21 is the age they like to start taking in recruits

  3. its never to late to go back to collage! tTheres a course you can do-i cant think ov the name sorry but enrole soon and maybe you cld atart in september!go to ur local job centre they'l give you all the info you'l need! hope this helps good luck

  4. It's really admirable of you to choose to join the police force :)

Well, this is only my point of view, so don't take it 100%

As for jobs like in the police force, you need to have a GCSE at least passed 5 subjects (if I'm not mistaken). It's never too late to take the GCSE though. You can always study by yourself or join a class for the GCSE exam.

But, it would be better to ask the police department in your area and ask them directly regarding your interest in joining the force. I'm sure they'll give you a lot of answers and they'll be really happy that someone who is young like you is really interested to join the force.

As for the depression that you had when you were 15, I really am not sure. But, it's okay in my opinion. As long you are fine now.

  5. You're knowledge is a virtue in training, I think they pull up a history report on you... I say go for it, it couldn't hurt.... good luck.!

  6. I know in TN, you have to be 21 to be a police officer - the legal age to carry a gun.  Might want to check out the age requirements for your state.  They should have qualifications on their state/city website.  You can also contact the department you want to work in and ask if you can do a ride-along.  My husband toyed with the idea of law enforcement, and that's one of the first things he did.  It really opened his eyes to the average night for a police officer here.

  7. If you really want to do this, then ask them what they are looking for as regards qualifications and experience and then go out and get them.  You can do it if you really want.  Good luck

  8. Sometimes you need to get out in the world to know that you want something different.  Sounds like you've come to that conclusion.  I would suggest going to your local community college and taking some courses in law.  Maybe even get your Associates degree.  They will know you are serious when they see good grades and determination.  Good luck. P.S.  I don't know that you have to mention one episode of depression at 15 if you fully recovered.  Most teenagers get depressed.
