hi, im trying to learn to surf and i found a 6'4" all merrick mbb4 for 225. its about 9/10 condition. I know its hard to learn on a shortboard to surf but i just wanted to know if the board can support me well. I'm 6'0 180 lbs and i tried before using a 5'4" and it sunk on me. Also, is this a good deal?

  1. Al Merrick 6'4" should be able to carry your weight.  Although it might take you longer to learn to stand on it because it's a smaller board, be patient.  Once you get the hang of it and get used to the board you should be fine.  Just keep practicing.  For $225, you can't go wrong with it.  Have fun and enjoy the waves.

  2. it is really a good deal. al merrick boards are really nice.i think it can support u because my board is 6'10 and for me it is kind of big but it supports me really well. but why don't you ask if you can test it out and see if it will support you. i got my board at bruce jones surfshop and they let me test out my board.

here is a link to used surfboards that are cheap. it tells u about the condition and picture.....

  3. Deal or no deal? DEAL!!!!!!!!!! ha ha ha.

  4. The deal on the board sounds great, but probably not for you. I am sure you can learn to surf on that board, I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board from day one. However, at 180, depending on how thick and wide that board is, you are cutting it really close. Don't forget, you have to be able to take off and catch the wave. For a beginner, that's often harder than riding the wave (heck, I been surfing for 42 years, and it can be the hardest part for me). You may want to start a little bigger, get the hang of things, and then go smaller.

Of course, you could take advantage of the good deal, put the board in your bedroom and buy a used rental popout to learn on. The board won't spoil if you store it for a while.

  5. Its a good deal but quite frankly all short boards will sink. So dont expect it to float real well when you sit or paddle on it. And if your sure you want to try learning on it then go for it. But take into account the kind of waves youll be surfing. Will you surf large or small waves. Thats going to be a key factor in you learning on that board. Small whitewash waves are no good for that board. Larger waves that are oh say stomach high and up will work best.

  6. Yes a al merrick for $225 in that condition is a great deal. if u want to surf buy it.

  7. Is it a good deal?  Yes.  Is it a board I would want to learn on? No.  Like trying to learn to drive by getting in a race car and entering a road race.

Short boards will sink because they are not desiged to float you when you are sitting or laying there.  They are a planing surface which means they support you by moving across the water.

  8. well theres actually more factors in if a board will float someone of a certain weight like if its an epoxy board those are super buoyant how wide the board is or how thick the rails are, but more than likely that 6'4 will float you
