My sister got some fish, but I haven't seen them, she has 2 freshwater sharks which she says are about and inch maybe bigger, and a balloon belly molly. She is keeping them in a 5 gal. I haven't seen them yet so I don't know, how big they exactly are. But does this seem overstocked?

  1. that's torcher

  2. Generally speaking, its about an inch of fish per gallon. So 5 Gallons = 5 1 inch fish. This is also not taking into account the amount of plants. The more plants or decorations the less fish you should have as well.

  3. Very Overstocked... and a very bad set-up.

freshwater sharks are usually aggressive-territorial so they will attack they molly and they should be in a 20-55 gallon or even bigger. Also the freshwater sharks will give off extra ammonia that a 5-29 gallon filter will not be able to appropriately handle the extra ammonia can be dangerous to tropical fish.

The ballon belly molly should also have a partner preferably the opposite gender so they will calm each other down. Mollies are usually kept in groups of 3 or more and if you wanted 3, 1 male and two females, then you would have to get a 9 gallon or bigger tank for them to fit and not be stressed.

  4. The ammonia build up in the tank from the fish waste is going to spike rapidly and kill the fish if the shark s don't devour everything first.

This is the formula I use to keep an aquarium properly stocked: One square foot of surface water area for every inch of goldfish
