Is this tax deductible??

say i want to donate some money to someone for their college. i am giving it directly to the person and no one else is involved. could this be tax deductible? how do you know and where do you find out about this and the forms?

  1. Sorry, no deduction.

    Charitable contributions must be given to an IRS recognized charity in order to be deductible.


  2. The only way you could get a tax benefit from that is if the person is your dependent, then you could most likely get an education credit for some of it.  If the person isn't your spouse or your dependent, then no you don't get any tax benefit.

  3. No, it's not since they are not considered a 501(c)(3) charity.  It would merely be a gift.
