The solution to raod pollution and congestion as seen by the British government:

Just make sure the poor people can't afford to drive anywhere any more.

Seems to me to be their plan of action.

  1. nope its really not a conpiracy.  cars cause the most pollution

  2. they must be copying California's plan

    p.s.

one good volcanic eruption causes more pollution in one day

than man has caused since the industrial revolution....

pollution from cars it totally insignificant in the grand scheme of things

  3. In the UK, the government makes the following assumptions:

1, If you have a car, then you have money, which you should hand over to us, pronto!

2, If you have a car, you are traceable, we have your address, employment details, tax details etc. You can't run hide!

3, We said we'd do something about pollution / congestion before the last election, and we can't actually be bothered working anything useful out, so just hand over your money!

4, We make £Billions from the motorist every year, if we didn't have that money, how would we pay for the Olympics, war in Iraq, our salaries etc etc

No wonder so many people have such little respect for law & order, when those responsible for creating and enforcing it see the population as an open wallet!

  4. i think these questions- pollution& congestion has to be answered by the road users themselves - the govt is only a facilitator.OK.

  5. who knows what government is up  to and what the public will swallow... I grew up in the beach area of Los Angeles county 50 years ago and you did not see the mountains accept for  20 days a year...Now you get 50 a year and so many thousands of cars so something is working  AND poor people need some how  to get to work also

  6. thats not really true. They are trying to tax the most polluting cars more than anything else. So if you have a small environmentally friendly car, you will be ok

  7. its a just another way of parting us from our money, i was in Cairo last week and there are 20 million people in that city mostly running around in 30yr old bangers and only paying around 17c a litre so it has to make you think that even if all the car and lorries were taken of the British roads it would not make the slightest difference to the grand scheme of things. Even the hated 4x4 driver is only polluting a very small fraction compared to the old bangers used as every day transport by people in over crowded city's in many parts of the world.

  8. Yep thats true.

I also agree about the Volcano pollution.

  9. If 1 person in 10 changed from a car to a PTW (Powered two wheeler) and 1 in 10 gave someone a lift to work instead of sitting alone in their cage, traffic jams would cease and therefore pollution would decrease dramatically - and we could all travel to work in a reasonable time.

  10. If it is more convenient and economical to travel by private auto, then people will travel by private auto. If it is more convenient and economical to travel by mass transit, then people will travel by mass transit. As a US citizen, I have no opinion of UK transportation policy in general. However I have heard of motor traffic being banned entirely or being required to pay a large fee in order to use some of the more congested streets in large cities, and I applaud this.

I am a regular attendee at county meetings where street and highway planning is discussed. Other whine for widening highways and increasing speed limits to allow them to commute from their distant suburban developements to the central city more quickly. My own position is that speed limits should be lowered and more stop signs places so as to make the highway safe even with the volume of traffic double what it was 10 years ago. People who need to get to and from work quickly should live near their work, duh!
