I have a KDL-40V3000 1080p HDTV, a Sony DAV-HDX 501 Home Theater Surround system, and a Sony Playstion 3.

I have my PS3

Video via HDMI 1 to Tv

Sound via Optical to Receiver

I have my Home Theater

Video/Sound via HDMI 2 to Tv

I know that my Tv has an (Digital) Optical Out. I was wondering If I could just use the PS3's HDMI 1 for sound and video and use the Optical Out from the Tv to the Receiver? Would I be losing sound quality? I also want to get true surround sound.

Also what sound field should I use for gaming? or Should I leave it on Auto Detect?

Thanks for the help everyone :)

  1. what other sound field can you choose from

  2. i have mine hooked up like this:

    hdmi from ps3 to tv.

optical from ps3 direct to receiver.

the games i played, all have dolby digital surround, so if you leave it on auto detect, your games should be in true surround. plus your movies will be to. just leave it hooked up the way is. unless your receiver only have one optical input, and you have two optical sources.

  3. ACTUALLY you're being REDUNDANT....

You don't need all those choices....

Your PS3 connected via HDMI and Optical output to your AMP is all you need for maximum flexibility....

Do the same with your cable box....

That allows you to watch TV With, or Without the Audio amp being turned on....

    And still having sound.....

    I'd LEAVE it on AUTODETECT....

Sound field for gaming....most games are HALL related, but I really prefer NOT to affect the game's ORIGINAL  Intent of it's audio.....

As for the Optical output on your TV set....that output is only connected to the tuner, so you only get the TV Tuner's audio, not all the inputs....just the tuner.

Some of the NEWER models are starting to integrate all HDMI inputs when they are selected, so the only way to KNOW....check your instruction manual about the Optical Output ....
