Is this the darkest day in Boston Red Sox history?

Im a fan of the Red Sox, and was a Manny Ramirez fan before this trade. All the Red Sox got in return was Jason Bay while giving up a reliever(hansen) and an outfield prospect in Moss. You can never replace a bat like Manny's. Jason Bay may have good numbers but hes no Manny Ramirez. Manny is the kind of player thats good enough that you can deal with the stuff that he does. Im ready to give up on this year, Yankees fans and fans of all other AL teams are rejoicing. Is this the worst day in Red Sox history.

  1. no mannys just made the team worse in the long run, he fought with the team, he wanted $20 mill. a year and he was just a brat lol .. i live in boston

  2. Wow...Ever Hear Of Babe Ruth Being Traded For 72 Grand?

  3. I won't go that far, but I would have been content if the deal had not been made.  While they are going to be ok major leaguers, Hansen and Moss were expendable due to depth.  However, the Sox are also out $11 million and won't get the draft picks that they would have had when Manny signed with another club.

  4. this is almost as bad as aaron boones HR. i dont know how a team could get rid of a future hall of famer

  5. Manny knocked over a Red Sox exec becaese the exec couldn't give him all the comp tickets he wanted.  That's when Manny jumped the shark.  Knocking over an old man?  Imagine him doing that to your grandfather.  Just because it wasn't your grandfather doesn't make manny any less of a douce bag.

  6. If i was a sox fan i'd be depressed. That's how much manny meant to Boston. But I'm not, Go Jays!

  7. no, you got jason bay who has only six less RBIs and 2 more home runs than manny does the 2 darkest days were the day of the buckner boot against the mets and the other waswhen they sold babe ruth to the yankees

  8. idk i think all of last century was very dark for the Red Sox

  9. But younger players may hit just as well, without the team 'having to deal with what they do'... I say let Ramirez go , (and Griffey too from the Reds). Change is as good as a rest.  Good riddance, and let's see what the new guys do, fo better or worse.

  10. Manny being Manny is the biggest joke in the AL EAST! Now the NL WEST.

Thank YOU Boston for making the team bigger then the Manny...

  11. I'm a Yankee fan and happy the Manny is no-longer in the RedSox line-up he's a Yankee killer. The RedSox got c**p for Manny. You will not be in the play-offs this year!

  12. The Buckner error against the Mets was far worse.

  13. No, that would STILL be the day that Harry Frazee sold Ruth to the Yankees to bankroll his broadway play "No, No Nanette"...

  14. Bill Buckner's gaffe and the 86 year wait for a World Series were darker than that. I'd be happy if I were a Sox fan - that cancer in the clubhouse is gone!

  15. You don't know very much about Red Sox history, do you?

  16. Believe me, once you see Bay play on a daily basis and see what kind of guy he is in the club house and community, you won't miss Manny being Manny!. I'm truly sad to see Bay go, but the young talent the Bucs acquired in the deal gives hope for the no-so-distant future. And Bay just might help the Sox win a pennant....

  17. NY Yankee Fan Here.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

    Have a nice evening.

  18. 03-January-1920 -- the Red Sox sell Babe Ruth to the Yankees for $125k cash and a $300k mortgage against Fenway Park.

Hard to be a worse baseball dealing day than that one.

  19. I'm not a Sox fan (I thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankees fan), but I'd say worst day in team history is a bit of a stretch.

As an objective baseball fan, this is a bad day for Sox fans (and a GREAT day for Yankees fans with Manny out of the division, so thanks, Theo! ;) ), but I'm sure you've had worse. I'd say you could think of a day in 1986 and a day in 2003 that were much worse. Or you could dig back to 1978 to find a worse day. Or you could pick out five days from 2006 that were a lot uglier.

In short, the Red Sox will get over this. (Even if I'd prefer they see a lot more days like this.)

  20. this may be the darkest day in the boston red soxs history but the best day for the la dodgers in history

    whooooooo!!!

    go dodgers!

  21. Manny has been my favorite hitter since Cleveland in the 90s, but he is now 36.  Ironically he started with Boston when he was 29 which is what Bay is; however, Bay is no 29 year old Manny. Bay was a big fish in a little pond before; Manny is great white shark in the ocean.  When Jason Bay arrives in Boston, he will not look so big.

  22. No! Do you remember what happened in 1986?  Manny was a big part of the Red Sox lineup, but this is not the darkest day in Boston Red Sox history.  No way.

  23. No, I can think of plenty of other days that were much worse than a day the Sox got rid of a good 36 year old hitter and acquired a 29 year old allstar.  Hanson hasn't improved since he was drafted and Moss had no future in Boston.  He wasn't going to start for Boston, so there is no real loss there, he is much like David Murphy.  Just wait until you see Bay play, he is a good leader and alot better player than you are giving him credit for.

  24. No matter how many people try to justify Jason Bay's numbers being "equal" to Manny's numbers, it all comes down to this:

Jason Bay isnt as good of a hitter as Manny is

Jason Bay hasnt played under pressure before

Jason Bay hasnt been to the playoffs

Jason Bay hasnt been in a tough division like the AL East

And on top of all that, he has huge shoes to fill, replacing Manny.

    I dont think he'll fit

  25. Okay, I'm not rejoicing. I think this is good for the Red Sox. I'm a Rays fan. Although I fear Manny as a hitter, I enjoyed him destroying the clubhouse morale. He was a friend of mine in that respect. I don't know why the Manny f***y kissers can't see what the rest of the baseball world sees. I guess on-field play will have to do the speaking for you to believe.

  26. no, he was a distraction and boston will most likely get another big name bat at the end of the season

  27. Two words....BILL BUCKNER!!!!

  28. To me the darkest day in Red Sox history was tha July date in 1967 when a Jack Hamilton fastball came screaming into the head of Tony Conigliaro, ruining his career.  He could have had a career every bit as prolific as Manny.  As a result of the beaning he had permanent double vision and was forced out of the game prematurely.  That was very sad.

  29. look at the numbers.  you CAN replace his bat.  youk and dustin have better overall numbers than manny this year - and they both actually LIKE playing in boston.

get over manny.  he has already gotten over us.

    .

  30. how long you been a sox fan? 3 days?

ill tell ya what, this is a good day. Im glad the sox got rid of that selfish idiot. The past few weeks, all hes done is whine and complain and say stupid things. I dont care what kind of numbers you put up, when you have a personality like that and act like that, your gone. welcome to boston jason bay!

  31. Jason Bay has numbers just as good as Manny this year, and Manny was just getting worse and sabotaging the team.  And NO, Manny was just going to get worse, so we couldn't make the playoffs with him still on the team. We'd be giving him away anyways, but now we have Bay who can play for 5-6 more years.  You clearly don't know ANYTHING about Red Sox history if you think this is the worst day. Remember game 7 of the 2003 ALCS? Yeah, that was worse. Or Game 6 of the 1985 World Series? Or when Enos Slaughter scored from first on a double in the '46 World Series against the Cardinals? Or how about Bucky Dent's home run? Yeah.  Those were dark, dark nights.  But don't worry, Bay will be better for the Red Sox than Manny was. Manny had no heart. Bay has a good work ethic and the team chemistry will be much better. If you recall the 2004 World Series, the team chemistry was EVERYTHING! The Red Sox played great even when Ortiz was out for 2 months, so I don't see how we can't play great without Manny, but with Ortiz and Bay! Hansen was c**p and Moss wasn't that amazing- he was our 4th outfielder. I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Sorry.

One more thing. We're talking about a guy who WANTS to be traded. He's very, very mad at our management (the owners, the guys high up in the system, etc) and does not want to play for them. So what makes you think he's going to want to EXTEND his time here by drawing out the season to the end of October? He's going to bring us down until even the Blue Jays pass us.  Bay is absolutely pumped to be with us. He was just on the PIRATES, and now he's on one of the best teams in baseball. He hasn't been on a very successful team in any of his 5 or so years with the Pirates, and is going to do absolutely everything he can for the Red Sox. He'll play his heart out, and yeah, the media will be tough to get used to. Same thing happened to JD Drew last year. Then Game 6 of the ALCS he hit the ball over the fence for what? A homerun? No, it was for a grand slam! And look at JD this year. He stepped up in Ortiz's absence, and he should again with Manny being gone.  Don't worry about the Red Sox. They finished SIX games back of the Yankees in 2003 and came one stupid manager's mistake away from going to the World Series. (OBVIOUSLY Pedro shouldn't have pitched the 8th!) And then in 2004 they finished 3 games back, and went against 1,000,000 to 1 odds and won the ALCS and then the World Series.  This team can do anything, so don't worry. If there's a will, there's a way.
