Is this the end of the line for MS Dhoni – Opinion
When heroes fall, they are seldom forgiven by the masses and the rise which they once enjoyed is taken away, bringing them down harder than anything imagined. Cricket is an ugly game, where a player can become a hero overnight by giving one outstanding performance,
but this does not last forever, as there comes a time when either age catches up, a career ending injury or a string of poor performances, closes the doors of success once and for all.
The Indian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in the four-match Test
series.
Winning the opening Test was not only a matter of pride for India, but a positive sign for Dhoni regarding his captaincy as a few losses can be lethal for a captain in the subcontinent.
A losing captain is rarely forgiven in that part of the world, which means that there is always a guy just waiting to take over.
With so much pressure, teams from the region (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758) have, nonetheless, produced some of the finest captains in the sport.
Just in 2011, Dhoni was regarded as the best captain in the world, where he led his side to their second ever http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup victory.
However, a series of losses against England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 had put the skipper under the scanners after the world cup, and while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) exhibited extreme caution and patience towards the poor results, they hesitated
in removing the charismatic skipper.
Perhaps, till last year they did not have Dhoni’s replacement or were not convinced if a younger lad would be prepared to carry the burden on his shoulders.
However, there is no doubt that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737 are the top contenders for the job, and since the two have been in the national team long enough to cement their place, it is believed that Dhoni might be shown the door pretty soon.
Still, one would argue that while Raina and Kohli are young and have proven their mettle, but that does not mean that they have what it takes to lead a team like India, because let us not forget that the best batsman in the world, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, crashed
and burned in the captain’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Peter-Hewitt-c66001.
So in cricket, one does not have to be the best to lead his side, it take patience and planning during a match that exhibits the nerves of the captain.
Dhoni has led India to wins from a losing position, which is the biggest quality of a cricket captain, we do not see this in soccer or any other sport, but in cricket captains need to be the guys with nerves of steel.
There are talks that India, in their next Test campaign, might see a new skipper. This should be avoided and perhaps Dhoni needs to be given another year to captain one of the world’s mightiest unit.
Heroes need to live on, and if http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chinnadupargea-Sachin-c50607 can be included in the national team even after a lingering poor form and fitness, there is no reason why Dhoni should not be treated the same. He is a hero in India and abroad, and he deserves a hero’s farewell instead
of a humiliating demotion.
