Is this the future? A car that does 200miles for £1.00 of "fuel"?

Question

A car is in production that runs on AIR, not petrol, deisel or electric. It does 65mph, has a range of 200+ miles and can be "refuelled" for a quid. It will cost about £8000 and is the size of a Smart car. Why havn't we heard more about it and would you buy one? No pollution AT ALL !!!!!!!!!

It could be done for a £1 it would work. But when the government get their hands on it the cost would be £10 per ltr they just don't give up. they are not bothered about the ozone. unless it`s made of money.

Some say that the energy contained in the tank of compressed air is to small to give enough energy 200-300km, which was advertised. The car has only been demonstrated to work for 5km. I would like to see more facts that shows that the results are genuine.

The car in question runs on *compressed* air. It doesn't burn air. It gets energy by releasing out the air. That means that the amount of energy you get out of the compressed air is equal to or less than the amount of energy you spent to compress the air in the first place. The air isn't a fuel, it's just a way of storing energy.

It takes alot of energy to compress air.

As someone said you are not burning air, you are using (most likely electricity) to compress air, than expanding it to produce the motion.  Compression of air is not exactly efficient, and the air engines aren't so amazing efficient either.  Not to mention the huge highly compressed air tank that will have to be re-certified all the time or it might explode if you let any impurities get inside that could rust it.

Here in the states, We like our big gas guzzlers... As long as they sell them we will buy them....

Its like a status symbol, Although I don't think anybody would admit it....

the technology has problems; but I think the original distibuted manufacturing idea has merit.

the problems are storing enough on-board capacity, extreem cooling of exhaust, and of course providing the source energy and equipment to compress the gas efficiently.

Given how long this project has been running I am not convinced of the 200+mile range or cost of £8,000 unless in large volume production

Electric vehicles, available now can deliver better performance without the need for an extra energy transfer stage.

Unfortunately we don't here about these things because the big corporations that run them would suffer (i.e Oil Companies, Car Manufacturers).  The world is now governed through the media...and if these big companies pay enough the media forget to mention it.  The same way that nicotine patches were available 15 years before they came out and anyone knew about them!!!

Quite frankly, the sooner this idea of air powered cars is scuppered the better.
