My daughter is 9 and going into 3rd grade. She will have homework monday thru thursday night. She wants to take gymnastics. She also wants to play basket ball which is practice one night a week and a weekend game for 10 weeks this fall. She likes to bowl in leagues also. So one night a week for 2 games of bowling.

  1. I personally think that that is too many activities . But if you think she's responsible enough  and that she can handle it , that's ok , but make sure she still has time to hang with her BFF's !

  2. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it isn't financially straining you,  her grades stay up, and she has SOME time to play You don't want her to wind up stressed.  That's about how active  was at that age.

  3. Kids are so different that it's impossible to categorically answer that question.  Consider how many times a week is gymnastics/ how long per session each sport is/ how long it takes her to do homework/ how she's done with the activities she's been involved with in the past.  I do think it's important for kids to have some downtime, so if the activities plus the homework plus dinner fill up her entire after-school day with no time for playdates, watching the clouds, reading books, drawing pictures, etc., then I'd say it's too much.  If it's just an hour on three afternoons a week plus one weekend game, the homework doesn't take long, she generally does well with multiple activities, and she's still got a couple daylight hours for self-directed playing every day, go for it.

My 9-year-old does one once a week sport for less than an hour and one once-a-week piano class for less than an hour, though occasionally in the winter when it's too cold to play outside as much we'll let her add in a second once-a-week sport (also less than an hour).  That works well for her, but a different kid might thrive with more or less.

  4. Well if she is asking to participate in all the activities, then I say go for it, if you can stand the schedule.  Then, see how things go.  How is she doing in school, does she have time to do her homework, how are her grades.  Does she seem happy with the schedule, or worn out and cranky?  etc etc etc.  Pull back if it seems like too much.

3rd grade can sometimes be very challenging, so play it by ear

  5. As long as she is keeping up with school work and doesn't seem tired and cranky or worn out then it should be fine. All kids are different and if she really wants to do all these things and can keep up with it all then they will be good experiences.

  6. in my opinion yes but if she can handel it all then let her go for it

  7. a good way to tell if your child has too many after school activities is if their academics grades start falling, or they start getting tired easier.

this schedule doesn't sound like too much though.

keeping kids busy is a good thing I think. especially if they are having a good time doing these things.
