Is this too much work for a 16 year old?

I have a 16 year old daughter who got a summer job, and is working five days a week, for nine hour shifts. This leaves her with hardly anytime to hang out with her friends and to just enjoy her summer before she has to get back to school. She hates her job and insists that it's the most boring thing she has ever done. Half of me wants her to keep it because it is teaching her responsibility, and she's getting money for herself. The other half of me thinks she should be out with her friends not having to worry about work. What do you think?

  1. its good for her to work but not that much she needs time to be a kid still

  2. Is she legally allowed to work that much at 16? When I was 16 we weren't allowed to....That's odd. I don't think you need to worry about her being responsible, the fact that she has been working 5 days a week that long, shows she is responsible, I'd tell her to take the rest of the summer off, because it won't last long. I miss having summer vacation SO much!!

  3. Honestly she's 16, at sixteen I worked year round part-time, and not because of financial reasons. My parents could have easily given me everything I needed and more, but they felt that I was old enough to start doing things on my own. paying for gas for my car and trips to the movies and other outtings with friends. If your daughter is ONLY going to work during the summer, she needs to finish this through, if she's going to work during the school year (part-time) she should cut down to part time now so she can enjoy a bit of her summer. But young adults need to learn, there's no free rides. I'm glad I learned responsibilty and hard work.

  4. Make her continue working.  Allowing her to quit just because it is boring is not a good idea.   Most people find their jobs boring at times and cannot just quit.  She is learning responsibility and is earning her own spending $ which is good.  School will be starting again in a few weeks so she will have plenty of time to hang out with her friends again.  Also, she does currently have 2 days a week off so she can see her friends then.  No reason to feel guilty and let her quit her job.

  5. Maybe she can cut back on her hours Teaching responsibility is a wonderful life lesson However, there will come a time very soon where she will need to work full time as an adult There isnt any reason she shouldnt be able to have some 'fun' time for herself & with her friends while she is still able to enjoy the pure joy of being carefree

  6. is that legal? they are not aloud to give her that many hours. there is a limit of hours they can give her per week

  7. In all states that I know of it is illegal for to a 16-year-old to work 9 hour shifts. 9x5= 45. It is illegal for someone under 18 to work more than fourty hours. Anyone who gives me a thumbs down is an idiot and anyone who answers this seriously is too.

    FAKE QUESTION

  8. What you have put her into is the best thing..she will gain work experience as soon  as she finishes her studies. nothing she looses. keep on encouraging her and supporting her. all the best

  9. Yeah I am a 16 year old girl and i can only work 5 days a week for up to five hours a day! so 5x5 is 25 hours a week at the max!!!!!! duh so no she is not able to work for 45 hours...maybe in two weeks but not one or nine hours a day! =)

  10. Seems like a lot.  I think that cutting her hours back to a more reasonable amount would be a good idea.  Maybe around 20 or 25 hours, something like 4 days 5/6 hours a day.

  11. 45 hours a week?

  12. Perhaps she shuld find anotha job that pays the same, has less hours, & that she culd b happy with. Tlk to her & mayb u culd help her find sumthin

  13. amy during the summer it is not illegal to work full time (or more) if your a minor.

i think that she is making a really good decision. your right it is teaching her responsibility and  she is learning that money making isn't easy. she says its boring because she's used to having fun and doing her own thing, but since she has stuck with it it's showing you that she knows that this is how life is. most of the time our job is boring but when you see your check it makes it all better

  14. Ä°ts too much work. Yes. Why do you want to teach her responsibility like that? Havent you been teaching her responsibility your whole life? Do you think shes going to go 'oh ok, thanks dad. RE-SPONS-I-BIL-I-TY. thanks. i understand it all now.'

Ä°t sound like youre teaching her to give up on life and accept a job for the money instead of letting her enjoy her youth, before she does have to spend the rest of her life working for a living.
