I have heard either way and I just wanted to see if this was worth going out to see.

I am 5'5.5" and weigh 110lbs and I am getting ready to look at a 10 yr old 14 hands horse for trail riding, I am not getting competitive just trail riding.

Thanks I just wanted to know what others opinions were.

  1. You can not waigh more than 20% of your horses body waight, so if he is stocky you will be fine. And if you are just doing trails this wont matter but if you go in a show ring with that size horse and your 5' 5"  then you will be penilised because you will not look proper on him. but for trails your fine.

  2. im 5.4 and have a 14.3 horse and have riden 14 horses :] dont worry

  3. No, I don't think you're too heavy or tall.  It depends on the horse's build, of course, but I think you should look just fine.

  4. 14 hands is fine! im same height and weight as you and especially if your just trail riding thats a good height

  5. Depends on how the horse is built. If he's a teeny little fragile 14hh, then you're too big. If he stocky and built strong, then you're fine. You can get a rough estimate of the horse's weight using a weight tape. Take 20% of that, and as long as it's more than 110, you're good :) I'm thinking you'll be perfectly light enough for most 14hh horses.

  6. Sounds fine to me, I'm a little over 5'8 and weigh 115 and my boy is only about 15 hands.

  7. I think that would be just fine as you are just trail riding. If you were going to be competitive i would suggest at least 14.2 but that should be fine for trails :)

  8. no...he's not too small, but it more the stockiness of the horse to be considered (diameter of his cannon bones, etc) ...that determine whether or not a horse can carry a particular height/weight

The typical horse can carry 20- 25% of his weight depending on his breeding and condition...

A brief recap of the calculations (your size/height doesn't seem out of proportion...I'm 5'8" and was riding an 14.2 arabian...) is in the attached link.

Good Luck on your horse search!

  9. Sounds like he would be perfect for you. In fact, you could probably be a professional jockey if you had the interest and the training. Lucky dog!
