a friend of mine, who uses a cable modem for his internet service as i do, told me that the cable company keeps a log of every site you visit. i said if that were true, and it does sound like a privacy issue, but that would make it easy to catch perves who download child p**n and sick s*** like that.

do the cable companies keep a log of the sites you visit and i=f so why can't they catch these effing creeps?

  1. Well I have no idea officially.  I would guess the only people that would know are CEOs and the like, but even they would want plausible deniability.  My guess is that no, they dont keep a log of every site.  Its a lot of work and overhead.  However im fairly sure that the NSA probably does keep that information, though they would never give any details.  As far as catching 'those people' its not in the purview of the NSA, they have more important things to look for.

  2. Every ISP is bound by international law to keep a record of every connection for 7 years. They are not allowed to divulge this information except to the proper authorities and only with a court order. The reason child p**n and scam senders do not get caught easily is that people receiving scam emails do not report them, so they collect their profits and change addresses before anyone knows about them, and people with wireless connections often do NOT secure them, allowing the p**n kings to park nearby and send thousands of emails within a few seconds. It is also worth someone's effort to take a month lease on a business property, pay for phone and internet connection and then in one day do millions of transactions. They then never return to the property.

I do not care if they do see my transactions, as I do not break the law. I am glad they have the facility to trace and catch many of these people, and have been involved in 5 cases of finding them, all resulting in long prison sentences.

  3. Hon, downloading p**n doesn't make you an effing creep. It makes you a human being with an internet connection.

It is certainly Possible for them to keep an eye on that sort of thing. In fact I think it may be a legal obligation. Divulging that info without a warrant... That would be questionably legal. Unlike downloading p**n, which is totally legal.

Relax, man. People are horny, that is reflected in our browsing habits, and it is none of your business or the cable company's.

They can and DO catch people who cross the line on things like child p**n, or now in England "extreem" p**n.

  4. All ISPs are required by law to keep a log of where you go... but they can only reveal the log to a properly authorized person who asks them, they can't legally offer the data in an identifiable way to anyone else.

  5. Isn't peoples privacy protected if they did people can sue them.
