and I scored a 70 on the practice asvab. My recruiter said if i score over a 70 on the real test something new the army is doing now is letting you pick your duty station if you score well. What are some of the best army posts to live??? I would love to go to hawaii, i've lived at Carson Lewis Bliss and Knox. Any suggestions to where I should pick to take my wife and two lil girls. Please dont answer if you dont know what you are talking about.

  1. I love it in Ft. Hood, it gets kind of hot in August, but the other 11 months are great.

From what I've been told, Ft. Meade is great.  Also, everyone loves Ft. Huachuca as permanent party.  But the #1 place I've heard is Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, everyone is always trying to go there, but they don't have many slots since its mostly for medical personnel.

I would not recommend Ft. Bragg, Ft. Drum, anywhere in Alaska, Ft. Sil, Ft. Bliss, Ft. Erwin.  And the bases in Germany are really hit or miss as to whether or not people love them or hate them. And Korea is only good if you can drink like a frat member and have no family.

  2. Just remember to get everything in writing! Sometimes they will tell you things that may not be true!

  3. If your family likes to get out and do things, then you absolutely want to go to Germany.  Great and unique travel opportunities.  When I was stationed there, I drove to Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Lichtenstein . . . all over.  It was a blast.  I also toured Spain.  The MWR offices in Germany offer travel deals if you prefer to do guided tours.  And, the beer in Germany is much better than anything you can buy in the United States.

If your wife and kids are homebodies, though, then stay somewhere stateside.  The stateside posts are all pretty much the same, so I can't give a recommendation.

  4. It will depend on what type of area you guys enjoy living in. Also, not all MOSs are at every duty station. I would have loved to go to Hawaii...I think that is a wonderful opportunity. We were stationed in Germany and I would absolutely love to go back there. I would highly recommend it...it's something not everyone has the opportunity to do. Plus, it is very easy to travel to the nearby countries.

  5. You'll get a "Dream List" but its called 'dream' for a reason... If they have an available position they can try to put you there but don't count on it.

  6. You better get any promises in writing. ADDED---What another here said is pretty well what happens. They can promise one thing, but actual placement depends on the requirements of the Army. It is also true that just because someone gets a good score on the ASVAB does not and should not exempt them from being sent into combat. There are many who are on their second or third tour who deserve to be relieved from going back.

  7. I've never heard of that program but I have been out for a while. One of my favorite duty stations was Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.  It's in Huntsville, Al and most recruiters don't even know it exists.  Great place if you like to hunt, fish, outdoors stuff in general.  It's also home to NASA and several large civilian defense contractors like Morton Thikol, Martin Marrietta, Lockheed etc.

  8. Maybe Iceland or Greenland would be interesting.  Iraq is also a great place to serve.

  9. italy!!!

  10. If you join right now you are off to Iraq or Afghanistan no matter what you are "promised". Think about it; there are many, many guys/gals already serving that have served tours in Iraq/Afghanistan  that would love to go to Hawaii. Who do you think has first dibs? Who do you think SHOULD have first dibs? Sure, when the war is over and they need your MOS where you want to go, maybe you go. Good luck!

  11. That isn't new - you could always choose your first duty assigned.

    There is a catch however...

The Army assigns people based on what the Army needs so there must be an opening for you wherever you are wanting to go. That may limit your actual job choices.

Hawaii is okay, did 3 years there, both at Schofield Barracks and Pearl Harbor. It tends to be a love/hate thing - and you will go through phases of loving it and phases of hating it.
