Question:

Is this true about adoption?

I was told that this new thing came out in Canada, where if you do not write into the government (or where ever) saying you don't want your info given, that your birth family just has to request the info and they can find you?

Is this true?

I have always wanted to know my birth mom but it seemed very complicated. Is it true all I have to do is send in my drivers licence and birth certificate and they will send me all the info on my birth family?

How does this work?

  1. Because you mention a new process, I'm guessing you're in Ontario? There's been a lot of changes in Ontario recently. That was the new law very briefly, but it was changed shortly after it was passed.

The LookingInOntario group is very helpful and they can give you a hand with the search process:

Also, if you're not in Ontario, they have links to groups and resources for the other territories as well.

    Good luck

  2. Depending on what province your adoption was done in your records may be open. If I had more information I could tell you how to go about getting your identifying info if it is available in your province.

  3. I am not from Canada and know nothing about the laws there, but I just wanted to say...

If you want to know your birth mom, I highly encourage you to start the search ASAP. I don't know how old you are, but there is always the possibility of her dying and you never being able to know her. Searching can be hard and difficult, or it can be a very short process.

Best of luck on whatever you do, and I hope you get an answer to your real question.

  4. where do you live? yes, most provinces or states in canada are open records, all but one.

    I think.

I'm not so good with canadian laws, but origins is http://www.originscanada.org/
