that getting a dog fixed before 4 months will make it so he wont be as large of a dog as he would be if we waited to at least 4 months of age?

like if i bring my male mastiff/doberman/apbt who is almost 13 weeks old to the vet to get all of the shots he needs and to get neutered this weekend...would he still be as large as he would be if I wait?

  1. Getting a ***** spayed is much more important than having a dog castrated. Your puppy left his mother and siblings just a short while ago, why not leave it until he is older before he has the op.

I don't know if castration will impede his growth. My GSD is now nine years old, I had her spayed before her first season. Later I read that when dogs are neutered early they can have longer legs. My latest ***** does have very long  legs.

  2. I have never heard of that before and I have raised dogs all of my life.

If your Mastiff is 13 weeks old, I think that is a bit too you to have him neutered. Talk to your vet, but I would not do it at that young of an age. I woud wait until at least 5 or 6 months old.

  3. *while pediatric spay/neuter on animals between 8 and 16 weeks of age is widely accepted as safe, your pet is best protected from communicable disease transmission when it is at least 18 weeks old and has received its full vaccine series from a veterinarian a week or more prior to surgery.

My vet says 4-6 months, depending on the breed. It is also better for females to be spayed before their first heat!

  4. Actually I heard that getting a dog neutered before 6 months of age can make them grow a little bit bigger than they would have if you had waited because testosterone regulates growth hormones.  With the sudden drop of testosterone during that critical growing stage, the body will continue to grow a little more than it normally would have.

  5. There is a lot of debate going on about this. Since he is going to be a large dog and they don't mature until they are 3 yrs old , you can wait until he is a year old before neutering. Your vet would be the best to advise you on this

  6. he may be smaller but don't wait...If he has mastiff in him he will be huge anyway.  And it's perfectly safe to get him neutered at that age, if you wait til 6 months he'll get testosterone in his system and you're cancer risks go way way up

  7. i wouldnt do it that early, i say at least 6 months old before getting him fixed, im not for sure if it will stunt his growth or not, but just seems better to wait till the dog is a little older and a little more developed.

  8. the only dogs that get over weight after the surgery are inactive dogs. This can occur with any breed. It is up to the owner to take the dog for 45 minute walks and monitor their food intake. This will keep the dog from become inactive and over weight.

  9. I dont know if its true or not, but I do know that my pup got fixed when he was 12 weeks old and he is growing up at the normal weight and size. If it does make a difference I dont think it will be a big one, maybe just a couple of inches/lbs

  10. Penn and Weimaraner Mom have it right. It can cause the growth plate to stay open and continue to grow, which will make the dog grow too tall and can cause an unstable dog.

Ask bigdogsporch.com, a forum that is devoted to giant breed dogs.

With giant breeds, it is better to wait until 18 to 24 months of age, preferably when growing stops.

With shots, you want them to be done separately. None should be done at the same time. Reactions are more likely to occur with combo vaccines and with separate vaccines you have a better chance of knowing which vaccine caused the reaction if there is a reaction.

  11. i have never heard of this

  12. I thought you would have to wait until a males testies have dropped before neutering and at 13 weeks they haven't.  Personally there's nothing wrong with waiting until he's 5 months of age before neutering.  In fact a dog will grow larger if neutered before 6 months than he will being neutered after 6 months of age.  An article I read states that not neutering or spaying actually stunts the growth plates and early spaying and neutering allows the growth plates to grow.  So neutering before 6 months will not stunt his growth or prevent him from growing larger.
