When the umbilical cord is cut, that marks the end of any physical connection we have with another individual human. We draw people to us, we are drawn to them; we admire and are admired; we work to be in the company of people we admire and respect. This is called 'friendship'. Friendship is fluid and changing, much as a marriage, but if genuine respect (as opposed to love) is the basis of the relationship from both parties, then yes, you can expect more -- and give more. However, as we are dealing with human beings here, flaws, warts and all, you can never fully know the thoughts and feelings of any other individual person; nor can they of you. Buyer beware.

Very Machiavellian.

In politics, I believe it to be true. For that matter, any endeavor which has self serving motives.

But in life.... my friendships are based on brotherhood, shared objectives, and blood.
