Yes, it is true. The procedure is called "intact dilation and extraction" and it is done very rarely -- when a woman is in the late stages of pregnancy and has to end the pregnancy, usually because the fetus has a birth defect that is going to cause it to die in utero, or very shortly after birth. It's performed so that the mother does not have to continue in the late stages of a pregnancy where the baby is going to die anyway. It saves her the emotional and physical trauma of having to give birth to a dead or dying child. The reason they remove the brain from the baby is so that the skull will collapse and she doesn't have to go through a painful labor. Don't be angry at your friend, because women who have this procedure are usually extremely upset and traumatized about losing their baby, and it's one of the more humane ways of ending a pregnancy that is already doomed.

Just so you know, anti-abortion activists often mislead people into thinking that this procedure is commonly done and is just another way of aborting a baby. It's not. It's not legal in the U.S. to have late-term abortions for any reason other than that the baby is already going to die, or to continue the pregnancy would endanger the mother significantly.

Be sympathetic toward your friend, not angry ... she has suffered a very sad loss and she needs support.

Yep, thats what happens in partial birth abortion. Google it. I never knew what it was and just found out recently. I was sick to my stomach after reading about it and how people are accepting of it and think its ok. Its very disgusting and disturbing.
