Is this twins scenario possible?

is it possible for two eggs to be released--like it would if a pair of fraternal twins were to develop--but then one of the eggs splits resulting in a pair of identical twins, so in all you would have a set of triplets but two of the triplets would be identical twins and the third would be fraternal to the two?

  1. Yes, I went to school with a set of triplets like this. The identical twins were a boy and a girl who looked totally alike. The fraternal looked like he was related, but not identical to them.

  2. Happens all the time - many times two of any set of multiples (triplets, quads, quints) are identical.

  3. I think its possible

  4. Yup a friend of my has 3 boys that way.  The identical ones shared a sack.  They are a healthy 9 months old now and she tries very hard to make sure each of them is wearing different clothes. (Mommy of course is going nutty, she already had a daughter first) She took fertility drugs with both pregnancies and technically the second pregnancy should have only yielded 2 babies

  5. There was recently a case of quadruplets comprising identical triplets and a fraternal sibling.

  6. Not very likely, but definitely possible.
