I just bought my first car Saturday. My dad went to the DMV to get it registered and insured. Then, he called our insurance company to get a quote for how much driver's insurance is for a 16 year old female. If you take driver's ed, watch a state farm video, and have a G.P.A above 3.0, comes to.... $88 A MONTH!!!! That's with driver's ed, and a G.P.A above 3.0!

Now my parents are really upset, 'cuz that's thousands of extra dollars a year--not on gas, not on the vehicle itself...Just insurance! They're not sure I can get my license now b/c of it.

This really frustrates me. I will be 17 in a couple months, and I really, really, really want to get my driver's license. I have a car, I'll buy the gas, but the insurance is astounding!

So my question is, is $88 A MONTH typical for other companies/ or in other states (We're in AZ).

  1. $88 a month x 12 months = $1,056 a year.  It's not thousands of dollars and in fact is probably pretty average.

Teenage drivers are volatile.  For every great teen driver, there are 100 crappy teen drivers who talk on their cell phone, run stop signs and stop lights, get into wrecks, and cause the insurance company hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.

Why don't you offer to pitch in on the cost of the insurance?  Pick up a part-time job and start helping out.  When you graduate, it's going to be your responsibility anyway.  It's no fun, but it'll ensure you get to drive your car.

  2. actually thats pretty darn good for a 16 yr old newly licensed female!

  3. $88 times 12 months is $1,056 per year, I don't think that is very high at all. I spend $280 per month to insure my car, my husband's car, my daughter's car, and my son's two cars. $88 per month is reasonable for a new driver.

  4. Unfortunately that is about normal for a 16 year old. That is about how much mine is and I'm 17 with a 4.0 gpa.

  5. It won't be thousands a year, actually only $1056 a Year and honestly thats not horrible.  You are a new driver so your insurance is high.  when you turn 18 it will drop a little at 21 raise a little then at 25 drop again.  Its just how it works.  I live in NC and my insurance comes $76 a month so unfortunately you have to live with insurance prices.  At least you're not a boy with a below 3.0 GPA living in NJ then you'd really be in trouble.  Also You are a 17 year old girl.  take a part time job.  All you need to do is make $20.31 per week to afford your car insurance.  Babysitting along with a ton of other jobs would make you that if you only work 1 day every week.  Good Luck.

  6. $88 a month? That's dirt cheap. I am a 22 year old male and I live in Texas. I pay $140 a month and have perfect grades. I would consider yourself lucky to have such a low rate because you probably won't find a company that offers you a cheaper rate.

  7. That sounds like a great rate!

  8. Hi there. I just got my first car a few months ago, and I'm 19. I think my dad is paying around...130, I think. It might be different depending on the state you live in, but I'm pretty sure that 88 a month is actually very good. I don't know what your parents were expecting, rates are usually higher for younger people because of they are more likely to get into accidents (not saying you're a bad driver) but yeah, I'm no expert but I wouldn't mind paying 88 that's less than what I'm paying now. And it won't cost thousands a year, if you multiply that 88 by 12, that'll be the amount you'll be paying for insurance each year, plus monthly interest. I'm starting to lose my interest in driving though, with gas prices skyrocketing. Is it absolutely necessary for you to drive at this time? You'll be saving hundreds of dollars by taking other practical means of transportation. Just a suggestion though, if you have to drive, you have to drive.

  9. Your question is confusing.  So you are 16 without your license yet?  You can't buy your own car at that age without a license, so your parents purchased the car?  Also, that is not thousands of dollars on insurance... it would be 1056 a year, barely over ONE thousand.  Was it just a quote your dad received?  A lot of companies give discounts for good grades, and multiple cars.  He might have just received a quote since you can not start to be insured without a license.  Just shop around if you don't like that quote.

  10. This is not typical. In some states it`s higher.

  11. It depends on what coverages your dad put on the car. Tell him to call your agent back and see if there are any changes that can be made to lower that premium.

$88 a month is pretty cheap for a new driver.
