My mom wants me to watch over the TV repair guy because she thinks he's going to steal something. I think she's paranoid. Does anyone else watch repairmen to see if they're going to steal?

  1. Yes, people do it all the time. I don't think you need to *watch* him but perhaps your presence in the house would deter any funny business. I've never had any problems but it's just a weird thought, some stranger in your house unattended.

  2. Yes, people watch the repairmen. And yes, repairmen have been known to steal.  I think your mom is wise.

  3. Yes.  Many times, they do steal.  I think if you stay and watch them it keeps them honest.  I know there are many honest repair people but why risk it?  Also, if you are watching them, you won't be suspicious if something does come up missing.

  4. I watch over any stranger that comes into my house for any reason.  Not necessarily because I think they're going to steal, but it's always good to be around so that if something does come up missing you're not wondering about someone who probably hasn't done anything wrong.  If I were the repair person I would prefer someone stay with me for that very reason.

  5. yah ive heard many accounts of repairmen stealing. im not saying all of them do it but it has been known to happen. plus....mom's are always right

  6. It's not a bad idea to be careful, especially if it's a stranger that you don't usually have do work for you.

It's probably more polite to either feign interest in the work the repairman is doing, or to act preoccupied in the general area.

  7. Mom is right, as usual.

  8. My mother is very cautious. I often would get annoyed at her paranoia. But face it, people do steal. The odds of you seeing that repair man again in life, are very odd - assuming he stole something of value. So yes listen to your mother. Watch folk who do temporary jobs in your house. Never let someone repair in your space, without you being present... your home is like a Toys R Us to a potential thief. Just do some check ups, turn the tv on in the room and watch nearby. Make small talk... keep him/her busy.
