Over the past days, many of us have received invitations to a conference called "The 2008 International Conference on Climate Change" in New York. At first sight this may look like a scientific conference - especially to those who are not familiar with the activities of the Heartland Institute, a front group for the fossil fuel industry that is sponsoring the conference. A number of things reveal that this is no ordinary scientific meeting: Normal scientific conferences have the goal of discussing ideas and data in order to advance scientific understanding. Not this one.

they are offering $1,000 to those willing to give a talk. This reminds us of the American Enterprise Institute last year offering a honorarium of $10,000 for articles by scientists disputing anthropogenic climate change. So this appear to be the current market prices for calling global warming into question: $1000 for a lecture and $10,000 for a written paper.

Sceptics generally aren't under the illusion that we have enough scientific knowledge to accurately model the climate - so where do sceptics get their science from - it comes from not accepting what believers take on blind faith.

You don't seem objective about honorariums as they are occur for pro-agw conferences also.  Do you think they should only be given to sceintists who support your own beliefs?

Good point - and thanks for the question!!

I used to think that the northern polar cap would be entirely melted after the end of my lifetime - around 2036.  Now, I've got a odd feeling that we may see it well before 2015.

And big-business will be hooting positive spin on the looming disaster by claiming lower consumer costs because of reduced transportation charges, cheaper fish prices, and booming hydrocarbon production.  

What kind of utterly asinine, absurdly narrow-minded, completely twisted, dollar-denominated logic must humanity use to justify its own demise?

Global Warming doubters, like myself, get their information from actual scientists, not bloated politicians.

Check with 19,000 scientists that signed a document doubting human involvement in global warming.

  Those that do not check these sources have already made up their minds, regardless of the facts.

All I ask is that these "19,000" scientists (who are so freaking good at signing documents) come together and produce a cohesive documentary that debunks the so-called myth of global warming and climate change.  

And it better be a d**n good documentary, too, because it would have to show three things:

1) How the trapping of greenhouse gasses ISN'T responsible for polar ice melts.

2) Why the polar ice caps are really melting as quickly as we can all see that they are.

3) What REALLY is responsible for the rapid increase in temperature in our portion of the last 10,000 years of human history.

And I say these three things because anyone with eyes can SEE what's happening to the earth.  A thinking person doesn't need 19,000 paid scientists to be dissuaded--they only need cowardice.  And there's plenty of that to go round, isn't there?

I think a lot of them get their stuff from TechCentralStation.com and the ironically-named junkscience.com, if they actually use the web for info.  Many seem to get their gospel from talk radio.

I'm a sceptical character by nature.And the global warming, climate change, global warning, doomsday scenarios are just pure utter money making, political vote grabbing(we'll save ya !),.......TRASH !!.......It is absolute scaremongering,,,,,,,FOR GAIN !!........

The thing that is most frightening is the disgustingly false, alarming, frightening and malicious indoctrination of young kids about all this PLANET EARTH IS DOOMED, rubbish !

It is just as harmfull as religious indoctrination of young kids !
