Question:

Is this yet another fake retirement by Floyd or is he for real this time ?

I think this is just another publicity stunt by Mayweather to create excitement, he just makes people dislike him even more by doing these stupid things, if he has someone controlling his PR then he needs to sack them and employ someone with at least half a brain. Does anybody believe he has actually retired ?

  1. Who cares? p**s on that little coward. He will be quickly forgotten.

  2. He is trying to get more money out of DeLaHoya for the rematch, he figures if he retires Oscar will cave and pay him more money.

Oscar instead already started looking for a replacement. Rickt Hatton was the first one offered the fight but he turned it down. Apparently he does not want to jeopardize a fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Also the winner of Cotto-Margarito is a possibility Oscar is going over.

And the other is unfortunately Winky Wright. Lets hope that fight dont happen.

  3. Through out history, most fighters can't retire when they should and very few retire before their talent is gone.

I would be surprised if he doesn't fight for several more years.

  4. Excitement for what?

If he fought DLH again, the following records would have been broken- without any publicity:

Record for largest purse for a single fight

    Record for largest live gate

    Record for most PPV buys

    Record for PPV revenue

The sanctioning fees were set to be astronomical too.

Bottom line is this: Mayweather could not have done anything to make this (non)event any larger than it was.  DLH now has to find a new opponent, and that means he will (in all likelihood) lose again.  That means DLH would then have to fight another loser from reality TV, then fight May again... 3 fights from now, nobody will honestly expect DLH to have anything left at all.  May knows that more than anyone, and he knows that sept 9 would be his last shot at a mega-payday with DLH.

Mayweather is all about money, and cares only about money, and retiring now will cost him more than any future bout could ever make for him, and he knows it.  So is it a publicity stunt? NO - he knows his heart isn't in it.  If his heart was in it he'd be banging down Cotto's door.  He did the right thing.

He probably knew this day was coming long before most of the boxing fans/ pundits on here, and it explains the staged fight with the Big Show that put 20,000,000 bones in his pocket.

Do I know for sure he is retired for good? NO, but it is the only logical explaination.  The one thing that boxers say when they come out of retirement is that they can't stay retired... Mayweather negated that arguement when he said his heart was not in it.  He does not have the competitive drive he once did.

  5. we will soon find out one way or the other. most retirements these days are met with skepticism, particularly if the fighters in question have a few good fights left in them, however if he leaves it too long, he would be advised to stay retired.

  6. i dont understand y he wouldnt have a competitive drive that he once did. he still had to defeat cotto or margarito. after he did that he could've retired in peace. i think its bad timing. he could've fought de la hoya and the winner of the cotto margarito fight. then retired, that makes more sense to me. is he scared?? maybe. he probably knew that he was finally going to lose and he wanted to retire b4 he signed to fight again to protect his record. if that is his reason for retiring, then i think he is the biggest coward. If he simply doesnt feel boxing anymore, then i understand that too. Boxing is Mayweathers life. thats all he's done in his life. I would get a lil bored too. Maybe he has other things he wants to do in his life rather than fight all the time. I could understand that. either way, he will be remembered as a good fighter.

  7. If Cotto-Margarito was scheduled for say October or November, Mayweather would have fought De la Hoya in September, probably beat him again and then retired before the drumbeat for the winner of Cotto-Margarito got too loud.  Since they are fighting in July, the winner most certainly would have been calling out Mayweather before, during, and after his fight with De la Hoya.  Now he can just say he is retired and get out before getting called out.

  8. It's fake.This is Mayweather we're talking about here.
