Is throwing a left hook something you just have to get used to?

That and uppercuts.

Whenever I am punching with mitts or something, it seems like those are the weakest punches.

My jabs are okay, but these are not.

  1. I think it is, it was my weakest punch for a while but keep practicing and learn how to leverage the punch, that is where I get most of the power from. It is a good punch to lead with and it is good to throw in combinations. Uppercuts are good because a lot of people leave openings for them, my suggestion is to practice them and eventually the power will come, and try throwing the hook tight with your body.

  2. yes you need to work on it. the left hook may not be your best punch but it needs to be functional

  3. It's not your fault. Some people have better left hook body mechanics than others. You can read the guide below to really help figure out why your left hook isn't perfect.

Focus on spinning your body more so than whipping your arm and you should be fine.

If hooks feel weird, you should instead try throwing hookercuts (half-hook, half-uppercut). Those will feel better until you can finally be confident about throwing it perfectly sideways.

    Goodluck!

  4. The correct form of a hook or uppercut are unnatural. Your body will get used to them and the corresponding muscles will get stronger over time. It's all about timing and getting your entire body to work together.

Just listen to your coach and keep practicing. You will get used to it and once you do, you will love throwing those punches. It is such a great feeling to send the heavy bag swinging with a hook.

  5. This is a really good question and a lot of people above me gave some good answers. When I started boxing I could not throw  a left hook if my life depended on it mine was more of a week slap . I thought I would never be able to throw one and I have seen guys come off of the street never been in the ring and have the most beautiful left hook you have ever seen. I call these people naturals. But like some one above me said work on it but do one other thing perfect practise makes perfect and you will get it it will just take you some time. I had 4 fights before I ever through a hook and I through it with out thinking about it and I was so excited good luck

  6. I never had a problem with hooks, I actually find them to be my favorite type of bunch, I just love smashing a hook into my bag as it's a really powerful punch.

The punch I found the hardest to do was my left jab, they was pathetic when I started but I can do them well now, but it's all about practice.

  7. Throwing a left hook (or uppercut) is like anything else in sports...the more you train, the better it becomes.

It will never get better if you do not practice the punch in your training.

  8. yess

its normal. when i first start working with people in boxing they say its the oddest to throw. its like throwing a 1-2 punch combo in a street fight. it just doesnt seem to fit.

in alot of cases there just as equal to as the other hand, but usualy for the mitt holder its harder to keep up with, so alot of times theyre either looser, or theyre using a stronger arm, so it feels like two different effects. also note, jabs are a quick little pop, ment to fell strong, and just keep the person at bay.

uppercuts arent that strong of a punch and are hard too work on. but when used correctly and they hit another man under the chin, they wake em up a bit. like whiplash in a car.

work on the speed of ur left hook, like work a bag and slowly move around it in a circle, then line up ur punches and try to get as much power. do this repeatedly, and eventually, u may still not hit quite as hard as ur right, but ull build up confidense to use it.

  9. No, but catching one is.
