  1. Another link that might be helpful to you is www.sailnet.com.  Private boats that cross the Atlantic are usually relatively small sailboats, so you need to be prepared for work, close living quarters, and a certain degree of discomfort.

You might also look for tall ships that are looking for crews.  They sometimes make the crossing from Europe to North America, often via Portugal and the Azores.  My daughter did such a crossing on a tall ship.

Post this question in the Cars and Transportation category under Boats and Boating and you might get a few more ideas.

  2. Many people are in need of a crew for their boats and quite often advertise on the internet.  Take a look at the links at this Google search link and you may be able to find what you are looking for...

  3. Generally they want people who know something about boats and sailing.  An Atlantic crossing is not something for a first timer with absolutely no sea experience.

You will need to have your passport and your own foulweather gear and your own safety gear and that will easily set you back about $1000... and you WILL have to furnish your own because most yachties don't have extra stuff to lend.

If you plan to make the trip for free... THAT WON'T HAPPEN... you will have to chip in for food and fuel and YOU WILL be WORKING on a WET, TOSSING and SLIPPERY DECK in BAD WEATHER... so you need to be in pretty good shape.

I have over 10,000 sea miles doing deliveries and charters and sailing on a small boat... especially an Atlantic crossing... is NOT LIKE BEING ON A CRUISESHIP... it's hard, dangerous WORK.
