  1. i don't know if it's still around, but VH1 did a segment on it in the show "i love the new millennium"

  2. Tivo is still around and quite frankly the isht if I may add.  Look depending on your cable or satelitte company the fee for the DVR service is 9.95 to 11.95.  TiVo monthly service fee is 12.95 (sorry they dont sell the lifetime subscriptions anymore) and with TiVo you can do so much more.

Connect to the internet, Listen to Music through Rhapsody (I don't know if that is part of the monthly service.)  You can also watch a program and record another (something that DVR service got from TiVo.)  But the one thing they don't have is the TiVo 30 second skip feature which give you the ability to skip 30 seconds ahead.  Go directly to each quarter of a program (every 15 minutes) or just the ability to control TV directly with there features.  TiVo is better than DVR and you own it no matter what so if you want to switch or to dish or back to cable you still have it and don't have to get used to there programming.  Plus it has local and national programming a week or two ahead of the DVR through your cable.  Again TiVo is the isht.

  3. Yes, definitely, and they keep upgrading the service.  You can get a box that holds up to 300 hours; mine holds a mere 180 hours.

You can play music, view photos from  your home computer, access the internet, have more than one Tivo connected by a router, download movies directly from Netflix, etc.

As far as I know, you have to manually set up recordings on regular DVRs.  One aspect of Tivo that I like is the Season Pass (automatically recording all showings), and that it "follows" a program; in other words, if the time, day or channel changes, it will automatically update its information.  (It makes a phone call every day to do this.)

  4. TiVo is still around and they offer the ability to connect to the internet and use a lot of services there, too.

The amount of hours of recording depends on which type of TiVo box you get and the quality you record at. And you can always add memory to the box, too. I've got a Series 3 which can record over 300 hours.

Just go to their website to find out more.
