Is toothpaste bad for rats? ?

My rats like to climb up my legs, onto my shoulders, and try to l**k my mouth when I am brushing my teeth. They really like the foam from the toothpaste. I tried researching it and found stuff about toothpaste possibly having an ingredient used in rat poison in it? Is this true? Is this one ingredient without the others bad for the rats??

i have a rat and i wouldnt want to take a chance. They might like it cause its sweet and sugary but i dont think it would be good for it.

Hi Sarah,  first I would like to say to Zig that 1) ain't ain't a word and 2) It is completely false that it is "unhygenic" to brush your teeth with your rats out.  

That is merely that persons opinion which is typical of those who know nothing about PET rats. So ignore that answer....

That being said, from the info I have found on the internet, it does appear that toothpaste is probably not healthy for rats. But the fact that you asked to find out shows that you love your rats like they were children. The good news is that you aren't alone. I have let my rats eat a small amount of toothpaste before too. So you taught me something. Thanks :)

Toothpaste is bad for anyone in large enough dosages, that is why we are supposed to spit is out and you only give pea sized amounts to babies.  I don't think it will kill your rates but I wouldn't recommend letting them do it.

First having your rats out while your brushing your teeth is unhygienic for both of you.Secondly yeah there are all sort of bad chemicals in toothpaste that are toxic to rats (its not even very good for humans that's why we ain't suppose to swallow it).

yes its really bad for all animals especially small ones. it has fluoride in it that's poisonous for rats and can kill them if they have enough. put it this way if a human child was to eat one or two tubes of tooth paste then it could kill them lol fluoride is really poisonous to any one don't let them eat it!

yes. it is!  if they keep doing this, put them in a different room, while getting ready for bed.
