Is torrent downloading illegal?

i'm just wondering.

i know LimeWire is, but is torrenting?

Depends on what you get.  If it's copyrighted yes.  If it's an open source OS like Ubuntu no.  That's why Torrents are still able to be found, because there are legal legit ones.  However, for the 85% of the other torrents out there that have videos, games, movies, and music ... that's a big no.

Just be careful with torrents, I have went to buying my software and all that.  It's just easier, and you have 0% chance of getting thrown in jail.

It depends on what you are downloading. If you download a copy of free-ware (free software that the programer lets you copy it) it perfectly legal. Now if you download something that is copyrighted, then it's illegal. Some people might think if it old or hated, like software like Windows 95, it's okay and the writer won't sue them or something for downloading  no-longer sold data. Be safe are just don't use torrents are download for legal websites.

Personally i don't know and i don't care cuz i use both. I'm downloading the HD DVD's of Transformers and Batman Begins simultaneously while i'm typing this answer. I made it to Level 2! :)

As long as you are not downloading any copyrighted materials and is not violating any copyright laws.
