Is transporting nitrogen dangerous?

Saw a job paying 16.00 per hour which seems to be pretty good....which leads me to believe it must be dangerous. It's not flammable right.

  1. I believe it is VERY flammable but I could be wrong, also it is dangerous. It can take your hand off it gets on your hand and will put holes in your clothes if even a drop gets on them.

  2. No it is an inert gas (non-reactive). It would not seem to be a dangerous job to me.

  3. You are transporting it by what if it is by plane that is very dangerous cause how things shift and when the plane lands and take off if you are talking bout train yes also by car it isnt really

  4. SECTION 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Evacuate all personnel from affected area. Increase ventilation to release area and monitor oxygen level. Use appropriate protective equipment (SCBA). To increase rate of vaporization spray large amounts of water on to the spill from an upwind position. If leak is from container or it's valve, call the Air Products emergency telephone number. Do NOT spray water directly at leak. If leak is in user’s system close cylinder valve and vent pressure before attempting repairs.

That's from the MSDS  (MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET)

  5. Not but it will freeze almost anything in an instant.

  6. AIR is about 75% nitrogen.  So it is NOT flammable and it is not poisonous.  The only danger is from the extreme cold of the material.

It is safe for the driver.

    Good Luck...

  7. I would tend to disagree with the rest of the group. Nitrogen is explosive. Remember the Federal building in Oklahoma? It was blown up with a nitrogen base fertilizer and diesel fuel mixed together. The fertilizer had 38% nitrogen in it.

  8. Nitrogen is an inert gas, it is non flammable.  The two main way's of transporting it are in a liquid state or high pressure cylinders.  The liquid can be in small tanks up to tanker trucks.  The Cy's can come in cylinders from a foot tall to a "tube trailer".  It is considered a "hazardous material".  Breathing it is fatal, and getting the liquid on your skin will burn you because it's very cold.

  9. Nitrogen is not very flammable as Oxygen. But don't get that thing spilled!!! You can freeze somebody's d$#k with that thing and broke it rite off!!!

  10. Compressed Nitrogen is dangerous goods (in international regulations) and Hazardous Material (in USA) when being transported.

The danger comes from the state of compression.  If the tank ruptures, the rupture itself could cause damage.  The Nitrogen itself, when suddenly decompressed would become extremely cold and this cold could cause damage and be a threat to public safety (life and health).

If large quantities of Nitrogen are released in a somewhat enclosed space (tunnel, ditch, garage), it could displace the oxygen and cause suffocation.  It is not toxic, however breathing it instead of oxygen is not much fun.

However, once spilled (and if all other dangers are avoided) it does not have to be cleaned up.  Our atmosphere is 78% nitrogen, so spilling nitrogen into the air is not pollution.

According to the US and international regulations, you would have to be trained by your employer before you are allowed to transport the stuff; therefore you would know what to do to avoid trouble.

It is not flammable.  It is not toxic.  In theory, it could expand explosively if the tank ruptures in just the right way (we did lab tests); however, this is extremely rare in practice.
