Question:

Is traveling on a freighter fun?

I want to take some time off and do some traveling by freighter. I've been aboard an MSC ship in port and have seen the accommodations, which actually seem really nice. Does anyone have any experience or advice for booking passage and and enjoying a freighter voyage?

  1. It depends on your idea of fun!  Are you a luxury traveler or a no-frills adventure traveler?

If you're the type who likes cruises for the activities, the meals, and the ship's amenities (pools, spa, gym, shops, casino, etc), then a freighter probably won't be much fun.

If you like cruising, because you like to be out on the water, you like to visit unusual places (and the freighter in question is going to them), or you just like the idea of surface travel (as opposed to flying), then a freighter could be fun.  Additionally, if you have an interest in the shipping industry or the workings of a cargo ship, then a freighter trip would probably be a blast!  Just be sure to bring your own entertainment (lots of books)!

  2. No, it is not fun.

  3. No I have not done that but I have looked at a couple web sites and the comments say its OK if you just want to get away and enjoy the sea.  But don't expect gourmet meals, and entertainment like on a cruise ship.  Here's some web sites that have information from people who have done freighter trips.
