Is using two passports illegal?

ok I have two passports, 1 expired but was renewed and 1 is brand new.

If I used one to apply for a visa and one to travel on elsewhere while the visa was being proccessed would that be illegal?

normally it is illegal - special exceptions are made for certain circumstances (i.e. travel to the middle east - one for israel and one for arab countries) but these have to be specifically approved by the state department. also, some folks on government service have an official passport for government time and a tourist passport for off the clock.

You don't want to be caught using 2 passports and you will be if you use them both.

I do know that you should use the same passport you use for entering and leaving the country. I had a friend who used 2 differnt passports on one trip and got in big trouble. They almost would not let him back into the country.
