  1. I've been there twice for two weeks at a time in 1999 and 2002.  It is extremely safe.  Since the country wants tourism so bad, the police will get in extreme trouble (lose job & jailed) if they are caught shaking down any tourists (more safe than Mexico).  We mostly experienced Vietnamese who were very happy to see Americans.  Many saw us and yelled, "America #1!!"  Other than the beggars who will target tourists, it is a really affordable place to visit.  Beautiful scenery and ancient temples are awesome too!

  2. yes! vietnam people are friendly. but just be careful of pick-pockets.

  3. Is it "safe" to cross the street?

    Get on a bus?

    get on a plane?

It depends what your doing. Lots of people go to Vietnam. Most have no problems.

I wouldn't advertise your an American. Why? Nobody likes Americans except Americans!

  4. absolutely, i go twice a year from sai gon to ha noi.. no problem, its just a wonderfull place, and the people are even better.

  5. As long as you don't look like an American, the world is your oyster... of course, as soon as you get into the country HIDE YOUR PASSPORT so they don't know you are American...

  6. I'm a Vietnamese, so I'm sure that Vietnam safety for everybody, although you're an American. We are welcome you to Vietnam.

  7. A co-worker just came back from there after a two week stay with no issues.

  8. I would say it's much safer than places such as S. Central L.A., or Brooklyn, N.Y. of the USA. The Vietnamese are friendly and always welcome the Yankees back. Pick-pocketing's more of a common problem to look out for. Watch out for the food & drinks you consume (this is my only major problem every time I go there & I've been there 5 times so far). There's a few American-run hospitals there. Most young Vietnamese speak Engligh. (& prefer to learn "American English" as seen on most ads on Vietnamese major newspapers & banners hung over most English  night-schools)

Wearing expensive jewelry  & carrying a large sum of cash is strongly discouraged. You'be surprised to see how many Americans being overthere. I've had a few American friends who've lived & worked there. A backpack, a pair of sandals or sneakers, a few pairs of shorts & some T-shirts should be okay for you to blend in. The cost of living in general's considerably cheap there & a great place to visit. I strongly recomend it & I personally look forwards to going there again someday in a near future.

  9. Its pretty welcoming place. A lot of people love Americans despite our failure in the war, the south vietnamiese love Americans for their Sacrifice. Its a beautiful place to visit and i recommend it. h**l Vietnam is trying to get us to lift our trade embargo so we can trade and become allies.
