  1. some of the best coffee is called Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica.  As far as I know, there are no volacanos in Jamaica.   I think it has more with altitude and climate more than the soil.   But it could be many other factors, soil being one of them.

  5. Not necessarily, but it certainly helps... just look at the Kona region of Hawaii, where many gourmands agree the best coffee in the world comes from. In fact, now that you mention it, most of the best Arabica beans (those are the good kind) come from small coastal or island nations with a lot of volcanic activity.

    Robusto beans (the cheap, bitter kind) used in your typical Folgers/Maxwell House, mass produced, commercial brands are grown mainly in southeast Asian countries like Vietnam and Thailand.

    So, I would probably venture to agree, although I don't have anything other than my own experience with coffee to back that up.
