Question:

Is volleyball becoming uglier with the increased use of double hits on def. and serve recieve?

I've heard that some teams are starting to play defense farther into the court because double hits on the first contact are allowed. Is this true, and did volleyball use to look better?

  1. I dont think so.

  2. Yep.

I began playing when you could not set a serve, and there were NO double-hits allowed - regardless if it was on a hard-driven ball or not.  And there were not "lett" serves - if it hit the net, it was loss of serve.

Now the game is much "uglier" when it comes to the touches to the ball.  But it was done for the spectators.  It had been a boring game to watch unless you understood the game.  Most of the time, setters would be called due to too much spin on the ball or too much contact.  And if a player set the ball, and completely changed the direction of the ball, but the spin went another way, it was illegal to do.  It slowed play, and dragged out matches.  It was hard for selling to network television, and it made for some boring play where the spectators where involved.

With the hits that are now allowed, the let serves, setting the serve, and the double hits, as well as rally scoring, it now has become a faster game.  It is no longer a game of serve, pass-set-spike, hit the floor, other team serves - and the game could sit at the same score for over twenty minutes.  Now a match can be done in a little over an hour (longer if there is the "must win by 2" rule).

    Hope this helps!

  3. Yes!..finally someone agrees with me..i dont know why they increased that rule its making volleyball more ugly but since i love volleyball i still try to follow that rule even though its really not necessary..

  4. Look at it this way.

    The game itself is beautiful.

Athletes are the one to blame.

Cheating, poor sportsmanship & rude behavior.

ATTENTION, double contact is allowed ONLY of the first team contact.

2nd attempt to play the ball other than after a block is illegal.

In ANY international game, the enforcement of rules are much looser if you compare that to any lower level of play.

    EXCEPT doping.

Tell me if you can pass a hard-driven ball with over-hand without spinning it.. ..

Ugly does NOT mean its illegal.

  5. double hits? thats wrong our school doesnt let us double hits cause its rules. but if thats whats going on with your place then yes thats ugly!! whats the point of the game if theres double hits?

  6. I think the rule changes occured for two reasons.  #1 they are trying to make volleyball more fun to watch, try and get a t.v. crowd and make volleyball more main stream.  The rallyies were to short for the non-volleyball player to enjoy.  #2  with the jump serve, speed and power of the game increasing you have to be able to get the ball up.

All games have rule changes over time.  Some people are always going to like the old way better.  the more pure game.  look at the major four, rule changes happen every year.  I took a while to get used to rally point in stead of 15 points and only the serving team  could score.

long story short, change happens there will always be people who like the purity of the original game but change is always going to occur and you must change with game or be left behind.

  7. well personally i love the game so i dont care how many hits a person gets as long as they get the ball back on our side so we can slam it back at them  =]

but yes, that would make it a little dirtier

  8. Yes, it does look uglier.  Some people are lazy and do not move their feet.  And then they reach and double hit the ball and it is ugly.

However with that being said, volleyball can look better too.  It allows the ball to keep in play and some people do use their feet and still make slight double hits that used to be called.  You hated seeing someone making a spectacular play and it was called because of a tiny double hit.  In international volleyball, they RARELY call ball handling.  No matter how ugly or illegal it is.  And they will not call any ball handling if the play is spectacular.

People are playing further into the court so that they can use their hands and not get called for the first ball double hit.  However, they do not move their feet and get the short shots either.

  9. yes, it's true you can double hit on first contact. but after that it's illegal i think volleyball always has and always will look good.
