it could very well be a solid long-term deep value play.  historically, the stock is amazingly cheap right now.  but there's a reason for this - much of the credit it owns is c**p.  and the full extent to which this is true may not be known until 2009/2010.

but the bank has a good retail presence and has, in recent years, become national..expanding in cities like chicago and new york.

The geenral trend in revenue is upward, although 2007 was nothing special.  I wouldn't be surprised to hear that another bank was purchasing WAMU.

WAMU is going down.  Go with National City, it's under $5
